Trekkies: Mr. Sulu is getting hitched

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/06/15/sunday/main4181709.shtml

Actor George Takei, best known as Mr. Sulu on "Star Trek," plans to wed his partner of 21 years, Brad Altman.

Blackstone asked Takei what was the reaction in his household when the news of the Supreme Court decision came.

"We didn't know about it," Takei said, "and we were having a bite to eat in the kitchen over there. And I think I bit into a sandwich when the word came down.

"And all of a sudden Brad fell down to the floor. I mean, he got down on his knees. And I said, you know with my mouth full of food, 'What are you doing?' And he was on his knees and said, 'George, will you marry me?' And I said, 'Darn it! I meant to ask you. You beat me to it!'"

"I just want to be a part of the mainstream American society, which I am," Altman said. "But I don't want to feel like I'm a second-class citizen - That I can have a domestic partnership but I can't have a marriage."

1. Congratulations are in order!
If Roddenberry were alive today, he would have done stories on it. He was very progressive.

10. Watch out for the black hole!
Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr Spock, commented on the gay wedding "It's life Jim, but not as we know it!", whilst James Doohan who played Scotty said "Ye canna change the laws of Physics!"

However, William Shatner who played Captain James T Kirk, simply said that "Mr Sulu is going where no man has gone before!"

6. I saw the interview this a.m.
Takei's partner was pratically jumping up and down in his chair the whole time. It was very cute.

Sorry, I got carried away.

All the best, Mr. Sulu.

7. G/B 4-Ever!
Edited on Mon Jun-16-08 09:47 PM by AnnieBW
I can't wait to see George next month at Shore Leave. We have his autograph already, but my husband and I are going to wait in line just to wish him and Brad all the best. I'm even trying to start the G/B meme with the slash fans. (Slash is a subset of fandom which pairs two characters of the same gender together, signified by letter-slash-letter.)

Actually, they're getting married in the middle of September at the Japanese Cultural Center in LA. Walter Koenig (Chekov) is the Best Man, and Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) is the Matron of Honor.

9. This Makes Me Happy
You know, I sometimes get that "ick" factor about homosexuality, but when I read about these people who love each other and want to join together, I just get this big dumb grin on my face. Even more so for homosexuals. To me it's just so romantic that they've been together for years and finally get their wish.
