So I was helping a customer in the entertainment department today
So a customer came up to me in the entertainment department today and started trying to ask me the name of a song that was on american idol. She started trying to tell me about it and I told her I didn't have any idea what the song could be called. Eventually I told her I didn't have any idea what song she was talking about because I don't watch american idol. She got VISIBLY angry after I said that, got in my face, and said "How can you NOT watch american idol? That is unbelieveable." and walked off.

Well fu** me! It really made me feel sick afterwards that the assumption is everyone cares enough about that show to watch it and it's "unbelieveable" if someone doesn't. I really have very little faith left in the future of this country. Didn't that TV show get more votes cast than the last election?

3. I can't help you; I haven't watched TV for more than 20 years
But that poor woman has major problems if her life is that empty.

8. Hey, I'm no tv snob...
...but I don't watch American Idol, that's for sure.

My guilty pleasure is "Cold Case"..I have yet to watch an episode of "Cold Case", when I'm not bawling profusely. We're
talking...major weeping. I think Jerry Bruckheimer is trying to destroy me. ;)

11. Amen to that! The subtle inference that they are somehow better than those who do.
I know of some very conservative Pentecostals who do not believe in tv and they are sure it makes them better than those who do watch. Especially better than Liberals. It's funny how the opposite ends of the spectrum bend to meet.

14. Funny
It just confuses me when people assume that people who don't enjoy the same activities that they enjoy are snobs.

Do you play Sims 2? If not, I declare you a snob who obviously thinks that you're better than people who play computer games.

4. You should have asked her:
What was the name of that one candidate in the last Democratic primary debate...you know, the one with the healthcare plan...?

5. Working at any job where you must deal with the public
Causes unbelievable stress.

Customer service jobs are the worst, but retail sales is bad too.

Sorry your day went like that.

I made it through some horrible job experiences because of colleagues who would draw out little cartoons of the three or four "Top" customers of the week - always with little epithets attached "Mr PeasePot" "Miss She Whose Odor we will not name" etc.

The important thing is not to ever take any of it personally.

7. I have worked in customer service also...
Why would you let it get to you like that? Whoever that nitwit customer was doesn't deserve your feeling sick about it.

Do what you can do and dismiss the rest. You'll feel a whole lot better.

10. Please note:
You have little reason to care about those who are under a doctor's care and take their medications. It's the ones who say "There's nothing whong with me!!!!1!11" and ask questions like that who are the ones you need to worry about. ;-)

15. Maybe she just figured that since she was in the entertainment department...
...maybe someone working there could have helped her with an entertainment-related question.

Don't give it more concern than it's worth. She may have been having a shitty day in the first place, for all we know. Next time, I'd humbly suggest sending customers like this to the web if you can't help. I'll bet if you had asked her to check the American Idol website, she'd have found her answer.

19. Actually you would be surprised
how many older people get upset if you even mention the internet.

And retail doesn't work that way.... at least not anymore. We change out product so fast it's not even funny. In entertainment massive product changes occur on a weekly basis, more than any other department in a retail store actually.

We also don't staff departments based on who knows what about what products. We don't exactly get a lot of people with college degrees in interior design working domestics. Or people with bachelor degrees in computer science working in electronics. Not for $7/hr. I am amazed how many people come in expecting a discount retailer to have on staff experts in every department. Can we tell you a little bit about products? Sure, but not much more than that. (at least not honestly)

We also have high turn over. So even if we did have someone we knew was skilled in say electronics, that person may only be working 20 hours a week and could be gone two months from now. So the person staffing that department will change frequently, and the person staffing it will be staffing it because that is who was randomly scheduled on our comptuer scheduling software... not because they have a personal or professional interest in the products of that department.

many people turn their televisions on every day of the week.

21. Same here
Out of touch that is.
I get people giving me grief on a regular basis because I have absolutely no clue what they are talking about when they discuss the lastest programming fad.
I usually respond with "I've got a life".
That really makes their heads spin.

20. I wouldn't have known either.
I don't like that so much of the show is about tearing people down. They let people on who CAN'T sing for the alleged "amusement" value so that Simon guy can rip them to shreds.

Nah. At least the majority of folks who participated in Rockstar both seasons could actually SING. In fact, Dilana, whose voice is truly unique, is about to release her first full CD. Her version of Queen's Killer Queen is damn cool.
