DoJ Bush Politico Brad Schlozman faces grand jury referral, possible criminal charges
Today's Must Read
Kate Klonick - June 16, 2008 - http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/06/todays_must_read_351.php

Brad Schlozman, the former Justice Department official who left the Department in August 2007 after he openly admitted to "boasting" about his hiring of conservative Republicans, is the focus of a new turn in the DOJ's investigation into the 2006 U.S. attorneys firing scandal.

You might remember Schlozman as the head of the DOJ's Civil Rights Division-cum-U.S. attorney in Kansas City, and most recently, his work at Main Justice. Schlozman famously talked of replacing Clinton appointees with "good Americans" and keeping tabs on a lawyer who he had heard, "didn't even vote for Bush."

The Wall Street Journal reports today that lawyers have filed for a grand jury referral, which could lead to criminal charges, in order to investigate Schlozman's involvement in improper prosecutions during his time running the DOJ's civil-rights division in general. The referral appears specifically tied to possible perjury in his 2007 congressional testimony.

The Journal, summarizes Schlozman's past role in the investigation: ....

4. WA Post: Ex-Civil Rights Official's Testimony Under Review
Carrie Johnson - June 17, 2008; Page A11 - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/16/AR2008061602363.html

A grand jury is examining possible discrepancies in testimony ....

Federal prosecutors in the District recently began to issue subpoenas after receiving a referral from the Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General and its Office of Professional Responsibility ....

The subpoenas give prosecutors the power to compel testimony from former Justice attorneys, many of whom had refused to speak with investigators. ....

The civil rights division has been the focus of employment discrimination lawsuits and congressional hearings. Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee asked Schlozman last year about the basis for bringing a voter registration case against a liberal group days before a local election. Schlozman later filed written amendments to his testimony after his account was challenged by a career official.

Legal experts cautioned that perjury cases are among the most challenging for prosecutors to build. ......

7. hate to burst anyone's balloon, but
As we all know by now, the DOJ is owned by Cheney-Addison-Rove.
Mukasky is a smarter but loyal to Bush clone of Gonzales and has resisted every attempt
by Congress to obtain information.

All the DOJ's OPR office has ever done is talk about an investigation, then a black hole of silence ensued.

The District mentioned in the article is District of Columbia.
The United States Attorney for DC is Jefferey Taylor, who was appointed directly by Attorney General Gonzales without Senate confirmation in November 2006 under a provision of the Patriot Act
which would delay Senate confirmation for 21 months after the appointment of a United States Attorney.
Taylor has NOT yet been confirmed by Senate.
Taylor came straight from the Bush Administration. He served as Counselor to Attorney Generals John Ashcroft and Gonzales for four years prior to his selection. Before that he worked as an aide
to Sen. Orrin Hatch, where he actually participated in the writing of the Patriot Act.
In 2007, Taylor became infamous for "botching" the case against Walter Anderson,
telecommunications guy who pled guilty to tax fraud, was supposed to pay 100 million dollars
in restitution, but Judge had
to toss the case because Taylor's office made a serious paperwork mistake.
Much speculation on the intent of that "mistake" which saved a Bush/Enron crony all that money.

I would be more than surprised if anything comes of Schlozman's case.
The US Attorney of DC is responsible for prosecuting White House crimes, and Taylor was put there
for a good reason.

btw... here is link to his picture. closely resembles a Rove-bot.
( what IS it about these guys all looking alike????)

Chew and swallow before linking...

8. Hate to burst the BUSH/CHENEY bubble, but this one is immune to Executive Privilege
Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 06:03 PM by L. Coyote
Don't forget, the resistance to subpoenas has been based in legal precedent, albeit the justification for the claims my have been outright LIES.

This time, the subpoena is for court records, testimony under oath in a grand jury inquiry. There is no basis to claim Executive Privilege!!

9. Someone's in for a whole lot o' hurt.
Schlozman's bosses should be sweating bullets about now. There are multiple DoJ investigations -- each of historic proportion -- starting to merge into one huge megascandal. Take the goodfella Scott Bloch, the head of the Office of Special Counsel. He was charged with quashing all of them and now he's under the FBI microscope.

Thanks for the heads-up on Schlozman, L. Coyote. Perhaps these traitors won't get to run out the clock, after all.
