Poll question: How do you get to work? |
|
I just joined the ranks of those that ride bikes to work. With gas the way it is, I just can't afford to waste it when I have two perfectly good legs (and a Schwinn). I think there has been a definite increase in the number of alternative commuters.

1. I don't know, I'm not working at the moment. |
|
Probably car, sometimes by bike. I am not about to take a job that is far from where I live.

2. No viable transit system in this area |
|
The only city bus that runs through the area would require me to drive as far as I do going to work just to ride it. If goes right past my office but it is the home end that causes the problem

5. We have that problem here, too |
|
I think that, in general, the US is lacking in decent mass transit. There's essentially nothing outside of the largest cities.

I live northwest of Atlanta and there is no public transportation in my town. The nearest bus depot is about 8 miles away in Kennesaw and I only work 13 miles from home, so it doesn't make sense to take a bus.

both are stay-at-home gigs, and the poll is about how people travel.

36. The poll is titled "how do you get to work". |
|
In that context, "don't work" is quite different from "telecommute". It's hard to see how popular telecommuting is if it's lumped together with "don't work".

dodging the occasional wild turkey, deer or armadillo. Or in the event of flooding (frequently this spring) I have to take a longer route through town. No mass transit here at all.

16. I walk down the stairs. Mr. Tesha, on the other hand... |
|
Mr. Tesha, on the other hand, carefully chose a job in Boston so that he could use mass transit to get to work. This worked for a while, but then:
1. The bus company dropped the route from our home town to Boston. Another company finally picked up the route with much-improved service, but in the meantime...
2. His company moved him and several thousand other employees from Boston out to the northern 'burbs where *NO ONE* could get to work except by car. For their employees to the south and west of Boston who were depending on "the T", the company provided a shuttle bus for a couple of years, but now, for financial reasons, they're eliminating the shuttle, forcing the last few people into cars.
Ah well, the best laid plans... Mr. Tesha's now looking for a new job, preferably back in Boston near the new bus route or (unlikely) very near our home.

That Bush economy just keeps rolling on and on!
Anyone know of any good leads for a hard-core embedded and realtime firmware (computing) guy, preferably right down there near the hardware? Or a Unix systems programming sort of guy?

After that, I begin trekking to the bus stop to get to work.
Working only three days a week also helps.. much less mileage. I do my grocery shopping en route home, get home on Tuesday mornings, and usually don't leave until my work week begins again on Saturday nights.

5 mile round trip to/from work Mr 'pede is retired and traded his car about 4 years ago for a E-Ton Beemer moped. Great for local trips to the grocery, etc. He can go downtown if needed but the brick streets do a number on his butt. Also goes on trips for DR appts at the VA, maybe a 12 mile round trip (???). As long as he doesn't need to haul alot of stuff or bulky items, it works fine. We have a 3-speed Schwinn in the garage. It's 15 years old but barely used. I put it out for sale about 3 years ago but didn't find anyone interested. We live near a community college, I think we should try to sell it again.
