Poll question: DU.....Where Are You? (Geographic Distribution Poll) |
|
Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 02:26 PM by marmar
It's been a while, so here's an unofficial DU Census by region.....Where do you live? (As in right now, not as in your region of origin.)
The Ye Olde English D gives it away for me: Motown, Michigan, Great Lakes!
Note: Apologies to Texans, Arkansans and Oklahomans - I wasn't quite sure which region to put you in, so I grouped you together.

1. I'm in Northern Virginia. Does that make me Northeast/Midatlantic |
|
or Mid- Deep South? I'd say NE, but VA is listed in Mid-Deep South.

21. Virginia is Mid-Atlantic, I've been fighting this crap about.... |
|
how different Northern Virginia is from the rest of the state for twenty years. To say that NVa is more progressive than the rest of the state shows how ignorant some people are. The Tidewater area around Norfolk - Portsmouth - Newport News is nearly as progressive as NVa. And there are other major cities in VA besides Alexandria - Arlington - Falls Church. For instance - Richmond, Charlottesville, Roanoke, Bristol, Lynchburg to name a few. Get over it.

Trust me, NOVA is more progressive than the Tidewater Area. It's really not even that close, especially if you live in the Fairfax County area.

40. Yes, but us Marylanders view Virginia as Southern. |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-18-08 01:38 AM by Leopolds Ghost
And until very recently at least, Northern Virginia viewed us as Yankee liberals.
Northern Virginia reminds me of Atlanta or the Sunbelt. More California now, perhaps.
Maryland suburbs remind me of New Jersey or Philadelphia.
I would say the new Mason Dixon line is located between Hyattsville, MD and Falls Church VA.
anything south of that is Southern.
They have levees south of Hyattsville.
They have a confederate statue in the middle of the road in Alexandria.
Also the suburbs in Virginia are very Floridian -- more controlled, segregated.
They don't mind Asians, and Herndon is split between whites and Hispanics.
But try going there as a black person...
They drive like people in Atlanta, 8 lane roads all over the place.

Think about the Civil War, peeps. So the split is someone else's perception, a refusal to identify themselves with the "backwards" South. Maryland is just as culturally diverse, but we're both SOUTHERN states.

:hi:
A few years ago, John Kerry came out to stump for Antonio Villarogosia. While we were waiting for the rally to get started (... running late, as usual, you know... Democratic Standard Time...) they played that song at least 57 times, I kid you not. We all knew all the words before Kerry and Villarogosia arrived! :)
