Dear Media -- We too are worthy of your respect
Dear Media/Journalists/ *Talking Heads*/ Pundits et al;

I am truly sorry that you have lost your friend and colleague Tim Russert. I know how devastating it is to unexpectedly lose a loved one, or a dear friend.

With that said, I would like to take this time to remind all of you *media people* in your time of grief, of just how much responsibility persons such as Mr Russert and yourselves have had over the fate of the public over the last eight years. YOUR actions (or inactions) in matters of investigative research/reporting have LITERALLY meant life or death for many of us *working class folk*

Such was the case with the Iraq war...such was the case with George Bush and this administration in general.

Many of YOU (and you know who you are) spent many many a month slamming Al Gore and singing the praises of George Bush and Dick Cheney all throughout the 2000 campaign and subsequent recount.

Many MANY of you spent months enhancing Bush's claims that Iraq had "Weapons of Mass Destruction" Then you all claimed in hindsight that you *didn't know* that you never heard from *the critics of the Iraq war and wished you had* bla bla bla bla (never mind that numerous *regular people* with nothing more than access to google knew differently)

Do I believe that not asking the tough questions was a deliberate omission in order to install George Bush into office? Do I believe that certain talking heads beat the drums of war in order to sell the American public on an Iraq invasion?

If I had been asked this question even two weeks ago I would have replied with a hearty and angry "YES" but after what I have witnessed over the last three and a half days, I am starting to think that you hold yourselves in such superior regard that you really feel that you know what is best for us and will go to any length to promote your own individual talking points.

I have watched over the last eighty something hours, as every media figure known to man has ventured out of the woodwork to mourn and honor Tim Russert--to the point where there really hasn't been any other actual *news* being reported by so called news outlets 24 hours a day.

The cable networks (esp MSNBC over the last few days) appears to have morphed into some kind of bizarre reality TV series where the *upper classes* have invited the *little people* into their inner circle to feel their pain and celebrate their greatness.

While I am sorry that a man who you all loved and respected so much has died...forgive me...but there has been such a level of privilege and arrogance and elitism about all of this by you media people, that I cannot help but to be appalled.

Must I remind you?

There are still U.S. soldiers dying in Iraq, there are still people who cannot afford medical treatment, there are people losing their homes daily, there are people begging borrowing and stealing just to buy the gas to drive to work and the state of Iowa appears to be on it's way to becoming largely under water and yet even as I sit hear typing this rant, all I am hearing on my cable networks, is discussion about Mr Russert's passing and wake.

In summation, I guess I would like to suggest that in your future *reporting* that you show even a fraction of the respect to your *consumers* that you so obviously had for your friend and colleague Tim Russert -- and a really good way to start that process, would be to actually INVESTIGATE and REPORT FACTS as opposed to carrying water for sleazy politicians and talking amongst yourselves on our airwaves 24/7 about how fabulous you, yourselves are.

We *the little people* also deserve better.

5. I just got home from lunch with a friend who wasn't even aware Iowa was underwater.. and turned
on the TV just for laughs, and MSNBC is filming people outside St. Albans School, where Russert is lying in state, evidently.

Excellent letter !

6. One tiny, tiny quibble

Yes, because google gave you access to news reports by other journalists that went against the grain of conventional wisdom and reported the truth behind the lies that led to the Iraq War, including journalists at some oft-excoriated "MSM" publications as the Washington Post.

******************************

"I have watched over the last eighty something hours, as every media figure known to man has ventured out of the woodwork to mourn and honor Tim Russert--to the point where there really hasn't been any other actual *news* being reported by so called news outlets 24 hours a day."

I can't speak for the rest of them, but here's a snippet from my own brief obit of the man that will be in my paper tomorrow (world exclusive! :) ): "He was also more than that guy who lowered the bar incredibly on “tough journalism” with his moderating on Meet the Press, in which he’d ask some ridiculous gotcha question by playing back video of some politician speaking out in favor of something he or she was now against, watch impassively while said politician lied to his face, and then fail to call out the politico on his or her lies. Not that I’m one to talk smack of the dead, but, Jesus, if that’s tough journalism, I’m Torquemada."

So, it's not as if press coverage is universally positive. Although, I should point out that I also highlight some positive aspects of Russert in that piece.

******************************

"There are still U.S. soldiers dying in Iraq, there are still people who cannot afford medical treatment, there are people losing their homes daily, there are people begging borrowing and stealing just to buy the gas to drive to work and the state of Iowa appears to be on it's way to becoming largely under water..."

And the only reason you're even aware of that is because of the media.

******************************

Point being, I do think there is room to criticize the extensive coverage of Tim Russert's death. But I also think that, when you begin your post as an open letter to all of the media and excoriate everyone in the industry, you're painting a broad brush over a lot of good people.

7. Most media questioning motive pre-invasion was foreign
I still maintain that the MAINSTREAM U.S. media was GROSSLY negligent in the run up to the invasion of Iraq.

I guess I should have specified that I was speaking of our MSM here in the United States.

When Kucinich appeared on MTP in Feb 03 Russert acted like he was nuts for questioning the motives for an invasion of Iraq.

If the above isn't promoting a talking point coming out of the white house, then I don't know what is...

9. As far as the example you mentioned, we're in total agreement.
And, far, far more often than not broadcast media (esp. cable news) and many of the more well-known print outlets were ridiculously credulous in the prewar years. Totally agree with you there. And I also think that the current state of the media, as sad as it is, should mean widespread reform -- before the whole professional industry gets supplanted by amateurs answering to no one.

I'm just saying that there's a baby in that bath water, however sickly the infant may be. :hi:

10. Gotcha!
I hear you...some correct news, is better than no news at all (pathetic as that may be)

The MSM irritating me has been going on for a years, but this recent jag they have been on is just too much...after all the blunders they have made over the last 8 years they should be embarrassed and apologizing profusely to the American public.

Needless to say -- I won't be holding my breath waiting for that!

8. We The People certainly deserve better...
nice job. :)

In keeping with SteppingRazor's response, the one change that would be needed (or suggested) is to remove the word "journalist" and simply say "corporate media." The word "journalist" doesn't seem to apply to the vast majority of those given air time on corporate media stations.

I acted upon something that has been bothering me since March of this year, when this same corporate media started to use the term "downscale American voters." Like you, I really needed to vent. I vented in a big way this past weekend...lol: www.downscaleamericans.org. Maybe it's just me and a few friends who have been extremely agitated by this, but it felt good to get it "out there."

We really do need a revolution. I've chosen to call it the Downscale American Revolution as a slap in the face to those spewing forth the BS. They just aren't paying attention to the citizens. At all.

IMHO, of course.

12. BTW Just went to your new site
Great idea and site! (I sent an email to join the email list when it launches)

I was also offended as hell when the MSM started with the *downscale voter* labels in this election cycle...they talk about anyone making under 50 grand a year like they are panhandlers endangering the public at large. It's disgusting!

13. I am loving your site, TFAR!!
You need only to sell a few tee shirts to make it legit.

I hadn't caught them saying this about those of us who make more than their notion of middle class wages (Which is some 200K a year RIGHT??)

But their whole spiel is about the far end of things. Today I watched the non-dead on MSNBC and their non-stop big talking point was the SmirkingPimp saying how AWFUL the idea of a tax on the oil companies were, and how didn't that remind all of us of that awful man, Jimmy Carter. (With a smirk smirk here and a smirk smirk there.)

Well I liked it when Jimmy Carer was President. And the only reason that under Carter, we had tough economic times is because of people behind the scenes like Kissinger and Bush Sr who made sure that the oil tanker deliveries were few and far between.

Please keep up the good work

14. Hey, Carni and truedelphi!
Thanks for the support, and for resonating with my rant and my intention. ;)

I am sooooooo not web savvy, so I'm struggling to get this going. I'm also struggling because I have so little time, but I still hope to get some semblance of a forum going in a few days. When I AM fairly good at is writing press releases and getting a basic video together to promote it, so if this little grassroots empowerment effort has legs, I can promote it pretty well.

Thanks again. Much appreciated! :hi:
