Sprint counters $199 Apple iPhone with $129.99 Samsung Instinct

So Dan Hesse and Steve Jobs are sitting around the wireless industry’s high-stakes poker table.

“I’ll see your $199 iPhone,” Hesse says to the man in the black turtleneck from Apple. “And I’ll raise you a $129 Instinct.”

Industry watchers since have been keeping a close eye on news from Sprint about pricing for its Samsung Instinct. Some analysts speculated Sprint would have to match the iPhone pricing to keep the race competitive.

Sprint executives promised that their price would be competitive, but offered few details.

This morning the announcement finally came: The Instinct will go for $129.99 with a two-year contract after a $100 rebate.

1. Are you going to switch?
The two things that keep me from getting an iPhone are the price and AT&T.

3. Throwing a good phone into the Sprint wireless infrastructure...
Sure seems like a waste of a good phone.

4. So you can have a Mercedes for $199 or a Mercedes "looking" for $129.

I'll take the actual Mercedes.

Also, $199 is the maximum price set by Apple on the 8GB. There could be lower prices once AT&T set their official prices.

8. What do we know about this phone?
Apple fanboy Walt Mossberg can't help but talk about how Sprint's Instinct is not the iPhone.

10. All I had to hear was "Sprint"
I live in their hometown and had Sprint for 5 years. My kids still have Sprint phones. And I can't begin to describe the ways Sprint sucks. My Sprint phones NEVER worked in my neighborhood and I called repeatedly and complained. For 5 years. Whenever I reminded them that Sprint World Headquarters was only a few miles from my house, they would tell me that I was lucky I wasn't trying to use my phone there, since the reception at their headquarters was the worst anywhere in the country. And they would laugh!

Then the iphone came out and I called Sprint and said I wanted an iphone so I was going to cancel my contract and since I complained for 5 years about lousy service, I shouldn't have to pay the $200 cancellation fee. And they let me off. But they won't let us out of our other contracts so we have to ride them out till they expire. But we will be leaving Sprint as soon as those contracts are up.

Next time I will tell you all about how screwed up their billing is. :)

9. Half the benefit to an iPhone is....
...that it's easy to use.

The other half is that it's NOT Sprint.

Sprint doesn't have former customers - they have enemies.
