What if the Bush Justice Dept. were running a child prostitution ring?
Imagine if the Bush Justice department were running a child prostitution ring out of U.S Attorney's offices around the country. Imagine if officials involved in the ring came and briefed Democratic Congressional leaders about the particulars of the crimes but insisted they keep their mouths shut. Imagine if the Democratic leaders did nothing.

I think everyone would agree that in such a case the Democrats in question would be guilty of complicity in child prostitution. No?

Why is spying on Americans without warrants any different than this? Ignoring the Constitution and violating the sacred rights of the American people is a very serious crime. Knowing about such crimes and doing nothing constitutes criminal complicity.

Well known legal precedent has clearly established that government secrecy laws cannot apply in cases of organized lawbreaking by government officials.

Rockefeller, Harman and the rest who were briefed on illegal spying have no excuse. They are criminals, the same as the Bushistas and repiglicans who directly committed the criminal acts.

If we Democrats ever want to restore some accountability to our system, we will need to start by cleaning our own house. Crimes are crimes.

4. My post isn't about the practicalities
of actually holding anyone accountable. That may take years.

I'm simply talking about reasonable Americans agreeing about who all the criminals are.

2. Crimes are crimes
You're absolutely right. The Constitution and its systematic violation is much bigger than any political party or any politcal leadership or individual personalities.

5. That was my exact first thought, too
With all the sex scandals that Republican politicians seem to be involved with, a child prostitution ring would not surprise me one bit.

7. I thought you were talking about this bastard...
...John David R. Atchison, former assistant U.S. attorney from the northern district of Florida.

Prosecutors said Atchison flew from Pensacola, Fla., to Detroit on Sunday intending to have sex with the 5-year-old girl.

9. That guy looks as if he's missing something - a soul.
I'd try to match his whereabouts with reports of missing kids going back a few years if I were investigating this incident.

8. They would find some excuse as to why it's important to American
security and tie it to being necessary to deal with Al Queda somehow. That's what they do.
