2. it would be considered proper
to stand when your country's anthem is played...and most people would stand for any anthem...

4. I haven't stood for that jingo bullshit since 1973.
Since I got out of the Armed Forces.

It's nothing but beating on the drum, as far as I am concerned.

11. thanks for that Tom. I refer to it as The Obligatory Jingoistic Exercise.
Why the hell are they playing at a funeral?? WTF?

when they play it before my kids' sporting events, that's always when I have to make a mad dash for the bathroom. What a coinkydink. (embarasses my kids less than if I stay seated.) And this hand over the heart crap? ACK. They didn't do that when I was a kid, and it creeps me out even more than the OJE in general.

If we finally get an elected President again, I *might* consider standing for it.

Don't even get me started on the Pledge of Allegiance. even creepier.

13. I work in a school and NEVER say the pledge
always leave the room, stand in a corner, or something

got called on it a few times, and mention Barnette vs. Board of Education. they never know what I'm talking about

15. That is your right.
I've never seen the SSB as being jingoistic though -- the text is about defending one's home against the oppressor, which is the USA at its best.

17. Please do not use the term "wheelchair bound"
None of the crips I know are bound by ropes, chains or any other restraints while in their w/c. We are not Hannibal Lecters.

Btw, even before I sat down permanently, I did not stand for the SSB, nor the pledge.

8. Technically? By what technicality?
There is no law. There is only custom.

10. Yes it is law.
You may want to familiarize yourself with 36 USC CHAPTER 3, Section 301.

http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/36C3.txt

And technically it's sang and not sung.

just sayin'

14. bullshit. whatever that law is, it's unconstitutional
Barnette v. School Board, 1942, SCOTUS ruling

applied to the pledge, but there's no way it isn't applicable here, too

16. I see the language of "Should", not "Must". Hence, its permissable to do whatever you want....
I haven't stood or even looked at "the flag" during the Anthem in a decade.

Gotta love how our own anthem's words is all about war. Makes me want to puke how they sing it at ever High School function, brainwashing our youth.

18. I stopped standing for the SSB when Bush was (s)elected
I get weird looks at the hockey game, but fuck these RW fascists. It's my right as an American to NOT stand for the damn song. I also refrain from joining in the Pledge of Allegiance.

So fuckin' sue me.
