"Some day, a Catholic, or a Jew, or a Negro will be the President |
|
of the United States." "And after we've had a Catholic, a Jew and a Negro, we will turn to the next majority and have a lady President."
A quote (more or less) from the excellent 1964 movie "The Best Man" which we just watched on TCM.
Nothing much changed in tactics and in personalities and in campaigning.
I know that many, most, feared a brokered convention but, at least in the movie, it is a lot more exciting instead of the delegates just being rubber stamps. In the movie they had two front runners and 3 or 4 additional candidates. All, of course, white Protestant males.
On the other hand, I suppose, it can leave a lot of hurt feelings and bruises that can play straight into the Republicans.
Yea, I know. Movies do not always reflect real life. Though I think that this was a play before it was made into a movie.
No, am not trying to resurrect any one's candidacy. Jut commenting on a fascinating movie with excellent actors, and script full of multi syllables words. No computer animation, no chase scenes, no comic books characters.

4. I suppose back then that order made more sense |
|
seeing that it was before the Civil Rights movement got into a full force.
But this, too, shall come.

5. What was not clear, and perhaps it was done in purpose (spoiler) |
|
is whether the Cliff Robertson character really was guilty in what he was being blamed, or whether he was just being framed.
