Wanna play a REALLY fun game? It's called- "If I could live anywhere...I'd live HERE!"
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 10:25 PM by BeHereNow
For years, I have shared this website numerous times on DU.
Especially at moments like this, when the creep of fascism
becomes ever so much more crystal clear to thinking people.

The way you play the game is this-
Go to this web site:
http://www.escapeartist.com

Peruse the various real estate listings for the country of your choice.
Mine has always been New Zealand, as many here know.

Just now- I shared this web site with another DUer on another thread
and posted my "If I could live any where" top pick for the week.
(Yes I shop for New Zealand dream properties weekly. It keeps me sane...)

So if you want to play, visit the site, select a country and a property and
post it on this thread.

Here is my current pick:
http://realestate.escapeartist.com/P-2005251/

Can't wait to see yours.

5. I'll play
I went to check what they had on my favorite, but there was very little to be seen. Good. The longer it stays a secret, the better. There was this one quote that I found though:

"In summary: If you can handle the negatives, Ukraine still has a lot to offer. I prefer to live here than in the ‘states’ mostly due to the general sense of ‘Freedom’ and economic and political advantages."

How things have changed, when "behind the Iron Curtain" is a positive.

14. Can I break the rules ?
I don't want to look right now. I have no idea where I want to live but I do know where I don't want to live. I can't dream of even having the money , the reality is too depressing .

I want to live where it never gets above 60 degrees and the sun is not glaring until 9 pm ever . I want dry air but be near water and trees. Some place where cars are not desired and a small simple home is possible to build all on my own.

Where I can see a wild animal that is not afraid of being shot and where people near work as a unit but don't judge , they just take you for what you are.

I want to be able to tell the difference in the seasons without a clock or calander and I never want to hear the word politician ever again.

I know exactly where I would live. Right across the street from where I am now, so that my bedroom would have an eastern exposure instead of a western exposure. I'd rather have the first morning light coming in my bedroom window. Aside from that, everything about my current location is perfect.

No one has ever dedicated a thread to me before

I'm humbled.

Well, NZ is wonderful, I'm sure.
And of course, DUer Al the Cat is there to show one around
But It seems their immigration is such
that one must be rolling in wealth or have some very needed occupation
in order to get in
I have neither
So NZ is out

Now, Central America is much easier
for instance, Panama will let you retire there
if you can prove you have $600/mo steady income
or $50,000 to invest

Belize is a bit more but not that much
or Guatemala

And, of course there are many who simply
travel back and forth from one to another every six months
renewing their visa each time

As I have a means of transportation that can get me there
even, perhaps, one that might allow me to slip out of this country
unnoticed, if I'm lucky and careful

I pick Central Americon edit: oops! I broke the rules
Unfortunately I know a bit too much about escapeartist.com
Seems the owners mainly keep up the site as a means to promore their real estate buisness

But, I have another link to share
two actually
they are forums, like DU of the sailboat expat community on the Rio Dulse in Guatemala

http://www.mayaparadise.com/bbswelcome.htm

http://www.riodulcechisme.com/

And one to gen info:

http://www.mayaparadise.com/rioinfe.htm

and one on the sailboat community:

The woman whose husband dumps her and her friends take her to Italy on a group bus tour?
Along the way she falls in love with a chateau she sees from the bus window.
It is for sale and she ends up buying it and fixing it up.
It is a great feel-good movie about how one's life can change in an instant.

I remember "Tuscany" was perhaps part of the title?

64. Germany is a beautiful country...
Went there on my honeymoon years ago.
Stayed in a castle type place near the Black Forest.

You are so fortunate to be living there!

66. thanks. i used to go on a real estate website all the time,
looking up houses and properties

just imagining what it would be like to live here or there with this or that.

it kept me busy and preoccupied for months.

67. It's important to dream... especially when there is so much to despair.
And lord knows, we've got plenty of reasons to be depressed these days.

58. I'm content, I love where I live.
People pay thousands and thousands of dollars to come here on vacation, and I get to see it every day. I think my life is good. When news of the world gets too heavy, I can get out of town a little ways into the wilderness or even take a walk along the Coastal Trail that doesn't involve driving anywhere, and everything looks beautiful again.

69. OK, I'll wait on London, but I did find this private Island near
Belize. I loved my vacation on Ambergris Caye and I could love this little island too...

I still want a place in London too, since we're dreaming. :)
