fascinating how language changes stuff. we euphemistically call San Francisco "The City" and Oakland "The Town" and life around elsewhere is defined by directions adjacent to "The Bay." otherwise we often say the whole thing, like "Alameda County", or "Northern California." often drives our friends from "Southern California" (SoCal) angry, like we are deliberately being obscure or wasting their time. i guess in a tangential way we do enjoy it, but we don't mean it maliciously.
