What's your opinion on this cartoon?

The local radio stations and blogs (largely right wing, of course) are up in arms and one even asked the cartoonist to apologize for implying Republicans are racist. I thought it was pretty funny and the outrage has kind of surprised me.

So what does DU think?

5. I think it is true for a number of people.
But I have been surprised at a repub acquaintance who is really upset over making skin color an issue, and at a dem acquaintance who won't vote for Obama because of his skin color.

The cartoon is true for a number of people, and find it funny to put it out in the open like that.

They're upset because it's the truth, and the truth hurts.

9. I Sort of Understand the Criticism
even though all it's saying is that Republicans are hoping for anything that would cause Obama to lose. It would be equivalent to saying that Democrats are hoping that American is prejudiced against the elderly.

13. Oh, yeah
I've been saying that we're going to see things happen in this campaign that we'd never imagine happening in today's America.

The racism is almost so subtle, it's sometimes hard to detect. But it's there. Oh, boy, is it ever there! And we'll be seeing all of it.

I've heard a number of people say they could never vote for a black man. When I point out that he's also half-white, which, by their reasoning, also makes him a white man, they sniffle, curl a lip, and blather something unintelligible.

Racism, ever so insidious, is going to permeate this election. And maybe we'll all learn something about each other because of it.

It's a dead right on cartoon. Thank you for this.

15. It's fine. It's not really saying they are racist, just that they hope to benefit from racism.
Which is completely true.

20. Good point. I don't see the need for so much defensiveness, but then again, I do.
I don't think that Republicans/conservatives are universally bigoted people, any more than Democrats/liberals are completely free of prejudice. But those who aren't truly hateful need to face up to the fact that their party has exploited racism in almost every possible way. So the cartoon is true, insofar as the GOP establishment of 2008 is relying desperately on fear and ignorance, knowing that they've run a historically weak candidate.

but almost all the pukes I know are racist. I have a cousin who comes to mind, he quotes Ben Franklin, "god helps those who help themselves" as a way to ignore problems in the black community. The "outrage" is laughable.

30. The truth is often a painful thing to those who are targeted by it.
On the plus side, and I'm being mega optimistic here, maybe there are a handful of Repubs who are genuinely upset at this because they aren't that way.

In which case they should register Democrat toot sweet. :)
