This is just something I posted on another board a week or two ago. That board is generally antagonistic to the liberal point of view, though I've noticed some softening of that attitude recently. Thankfully.
I'm not claiming this is a great piece of writing or anything like that. It's just a drunken rant I posted on a website that was until recently
very conservative. I just read it, and noticed I seemed to be writing more for the DU crowd. :)
If we can get this man elected, American politics will be changed forever, very much for the better of the world.
Our nation can once again focus on the common good. We will once again believe in a tide that lifts all boats.
We will once again believe in the "American dream," a dream that has been sapped by the Republicans' thirty year onslaught of class warfare, in which the very, very wealthy have stolen from everyone else, while convincing many people, even some of the most downtrodden, that the conservatives are on their side.
We will bring an end to the pitting of white against black, man against woman, straight against gay, southerner against northerner.
We will return to the idea that every man (and woman, too) is created equal, with certain rights inalienably endowed by our creator.
We will reject war and violence as the primary tool of foreign relations, though we will remain strong, and righteously defend ourselves against those that seek to do us harm.
We will seek to shun those that knowingly spread malicious lies to protect the status quo, while calmly educating those that believe the malicious lies that they have been told.
Republicans have exploited fears, for many years, in order to steal our dreams for their own benefit. We shall stand up and reclaim those dreams, and turn them into reality.
We will work for a world that doesn't tolerate liars, and the lies they spread on internet message boards, nor the ignorant, hateful mindset that spawns them -- or that accepts them without question.
We will reclaim the best of American ideals... that every person is innocent until proven guilty, and that a person must be proven guilty before they are deprived of their liberty.
We will reject the idea of a "unitary executive," and re-embrace the idea of three co-equal branches of government. This is not a dictatorship, no matter how much you so-called lovers of the "American way" yelp otherwise.
We will reject the concept of warrantless wiretaps of the American people, because we believe in the fourth amendment to the Constitution. We liberals believe in the entire Constitution, the entire Bill Of Rights, not just the second amendment.
We insist that something called the Great Writ Of Habeas Corpus be enforced. This in the foundation of Western criminal law. It literally means "show me the body." It means that if you are arrested and thrown in prison, you should have a right to challenge your detention, and ask, Hey why am I in prison?
But some of you so-called conservatives decry that position nowadays.
You don't like the fact that the Supreme Court said the other day that Habeas Corpus is still in effect. Why not?
Do you really think that it's okay for the US government to lock someone up and throw away the key? Without giving them a chance to even ask "Hey, why am I in prison?"
Do you really want to throw away our principles so quick and easily?
Do you even understand the concept of a "principle?"
Habeas Corpus is the very foundation of Western law, and some of you just want to throw it away. You have no understanding whatsoever of what a "free country" even means.
Some of you supposed conservatives yell and complain that liberals hate America. Yet, some of you Republicans, mistakenly believing that you are conservatives, are volunteering, and even urging, that we abandon everything that makes America so special.
Those of you are ignorant; you probably aren't hateful, you're just misguided and immature.
Think a little more carefully. Constitutional guarantees are meant for everyone. Once they are gone, they are gone. And that means for you too. Think before you speak, would be wise advice.
And for the people knowingly spreading sleazy lies about the Democratic nominee, well you are just sleazy. And hateful. And racist. And pathetic.
Vote for who you want. I'd like it if you vote for Obama, because McCain will just mean more of the same. More needless war, more government spying on American citizens, and more ignoring of the Constitution.
Vote for Obama if you want to return to Constitutional government, where all people are treated equally under the law, and all people are treated as human beings, with basic human rights.
If somehow, I'm proved wrong, and Obama turns out to be a secret Muslim terrorist, he will be unanimously impeached before midnight on January 22.
