36. My point is that it is *not* an error for Bush to begin a sentence with "and,"
even though many people (mostly Americans) have had a "rule" drummed into their heads that really is not a rule at all. It isn't "wrong" to begin a sentence with "and" (or with any other coordinating conjunction), though it is not something one should do carelessly or often--which is why I call it a heavy spice.

I presented my credentials because whenever anyone says a grammar or usage rule is not really a rule, those who have been taught the rule often react with some sort of Who do you think you are? outrage.

While I am at it, I might also point out that it isn't "wrong" to end a sentence with a preposition, either, because what appears to be a preposition is often the adverbial particle in a phrasal verb, and as such should not be separated from the verb it belongs to:
http://www.grammartips.homestead.com/prepositions1.html
http://www.grammartips.homestead.com/prepositions2.html

My other purpose was, obviously, to invite my fellow DUers to visit my websites, if they happen to have an interest in grammar and usage, essay writing, teaching, or poetry.

I have many other websites, as well, that might be interesting to other DUers have have no interest in those four topics.

42. That's alright...there are plenty of doctors with "dual loyalties"
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 01:48 PM by InkAddict
Cosmetic-only surgeons won't practice on physically or mentally "sick" people unless (1)those patients are willing to part with lots of money for vanity's sake, and (2) there's a small risk of liability for the doctor. That means, if a less than wealthy person wants to dispose of a savings account for bigger boobs, there's little chance they'll sue for a less than satisfactory result and/or even harm. Generally, after Informed Consent, and with the person's unattractive character trait, vanity, this doctor's peers and lawyers can overcome almost all issues regarding "standard of care." There's an added bonus of "doing no harm" because how can making people "more" attractive do harm except when they don't follow instructions or go on a wild self-sabatoging spree postoperatively because they look so good?

Often times, this type of doctor will occasionally perform a medically necessary "reconstruction" or offer voluntary service outside of the, and I emphasize, chosen, scope of practice, to be sure that no one claims he's just after his patient's money.

That said, I don't really find it objectionable to change the shape of one's body if you can accept the results and didn't do it for the "wrong" reasons that would bring harm on oneself or hurt another. Guess somebody's got to do it though why it needs to be their only/whole focus can only remain a mystery and, IMHO, a waste of their considerable healing skills. Likewise, those civilian docs who "volunteer" for pseudo-military assignments or those who mascarade as civilian docs while having oaths higher than the patient's best interest bother me. Following orders and doing no harm to patients can be a mighty dicey paradoxical dilemma in that situation, and I don't respect those that decide there's no problem with the personal ethics of practicing under those circumstances.
