Tom Brokaw: 'Meet the Press' til Nov. 4

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Tim Russert, the late host of Meet the Press, was about as close to irreplaceable as they come.

So, for now, NBC News is not really replacing him.

The network, instead, is turning to a stand-in - the man who brought us "The Greatest Generation'' -- through the presidential election.

Brian Williams, anchor of NBC Nightly News, sat in today, the second show since Russert's sudden death. And he was making another tribute to Russert on a show featuring the guests who were slated for the Sunday show that Russert was preparing when he died, at 58, of a heart attack: Sens. Joe Biden (D-Del.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.)

But starting next Sunday, the network announced this morning off-air, Tom Brokaw, the semi-retired NBC News anchor and author, will serve as moderator of Meet the Press through the 2008 presidential election.

1. Great choice!
I'm glad he's taken it, though on a temporary basis.

3. One Iraq War cheerleader replaces another.
Excuse me, but I am not impressed.

Brokaw is a choice that the McCain folks will be very pleased with.

7. Is he really?
I've always wondered about his speech, which is often garbled. I thought it might be high blood pressure medication or something of that nature.

8. Russert's death was a real blow to the McCain campaign and don't think...
that they haven't discussed it deep with the bowels of the McStain camp.

9. He has (physically, not politically) woken up since 2000
Ah, yaas, Election Night 2000, I shall never forget: Dan RATHER was all wired up, popping up and down in his chair, spouting regionalisms. The other anchors were at least doing their jobs. And then there was BROKAW----so BORED, blase, mumbling through almost literal somnolescence. He had seen it all, done it all, and this was just one more piddling little election to him. Even when the evening started showing signs of something SCREWN, he barely stopped chewing on his tongue.

In the last few years, out of the *total* grind, he has seemed to be more "alert".
