How many things have the GOP renamed?
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 11:08 AM by ColbertWatcher
Besides spinning the actual definition of "reform", please help compile a list of things the GOP has redefined as part of their Perpetual War propaganda campaign.

(EDIT TO ADD)
Okay, it doesn't have to be directly related to the War on Terra.

Oh, and that reminds me "fair and balances" as fair and balanced.

We should rename it Clinton National Airport when we get a filibuster proof Senate next year. After all, it had already been named for one president when they renamed it after Saint Ronnie.

Edit: And while we're at it, let's rename those new monster aircraft carriers after people who weren't jackasses.

64. Ronald Reagan Legacy Project (RRLP)
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 07:01 AM by Lasher
The mission of the Ronald Reagan Legacy Project (RRLP), according to the organization's web site, is "to honor and memorialize the historic achievements of President Ronald Reagan. It aims to do so by naming at least one notable public landmark in each state and all 3067 counties after the 40th president.... In recognition of President Reagan's leadership role in the defeat of communism, the Project also seeks to honor his memory in formerly communist countries."

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Ronald_Reagan_Legacy_Project

RRLP is funded by Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform Foundation, which is an organization that does everything it can to support the wealthy elite's desire to pay no taxes. In their efforts to make Saint Ronnie of Reagan out to be something other than the loser he really was, they hope to make it easier to perpetuate his failed policies, particularly the trickle-down theory, which was repackaged by Reagan as supply-side economics.

...there is one thing named after Reagan that I find hilarious:

"For seven years the Historical Society of North Dakota has fought to preserve that state's last Minuteman missile launch complex, hoping to open it as a Cold War tourist attraction."

(...)

"Considering the curious sequence of events that led to the creation of the Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Missile Silo Historic Site, we can perhaps state here with some certainty that THE APPARENT SECRET TO GETTING MONEY FOR A TOURIST ATTRACTION is to name it after Ronald Reagan or a Reagan-era policy." (Emphasis added)

35. Redeployment = cut and run.
In the spring of 1983, President Reagan and his team of hawkish advisors decided to intervene in Lebanon's civil war on behalf of Christian President Amin Gemayel. On March 24, the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit was dispatched to Lebanon where Moslem and Christian factions were fighting.

On April 28, 1983, a suicide bomber drove a van loaded with 2,000 pounds of explosives into the U.S. embassy in Beirut. Sixty-three people died, including seventeen Americans.

Four months later (September 6, 1983), two U.S. Marines were killed by rocket and mortar fire. At an October 19 press conference, Reagan was asked about the safety of the Marines in Beirut to which he replied, "We're looking at everything that can be done to try and make their position safer. We're not sitting idly by."

A few days later (October 23), another suicide bomber drove a truck loaded with explosives into the headquarters building of the First Battalion, 8th Marines, located at the Beirut airport. The resulting explosion killed 241 American servicemen.

Three months later, the Reagan administration removed American troops from Beirut and put them aboard offshore ships. Reagan described the retreat as taking "decisive new steps." Explained spokesman Larry Speakes, "We don't consider this a withdrawal but more of a redeployment."

Big government = social programs. Despite years of effort they've not quite managed to make that one stick. Most people equate big government to overall government spending. Republicans want you to think 'big government' is spending only on things they don't like. Wars of aggression don't count.

There is a George Bush Center for Intelligence, which is sort of like

highway, which must run alongside a defunct sewage treatment plant, or something.

As one who grew up near National Airport in D.C. as a kid, I also refuse to call it
anything but National Airport. If we have to include the name of a president in the
name, I use the one first assigned to it: Washington.

60. I thought I could expect better form the WashingtonPost...
but the title they picked, Hate Groups' Newest Target, shows maybe I'm expecting too much.

Then, one of the asses, who I expect nothing from, farts out a classic GOPism:
"Our side does better when the public is being pressured, when gas prices are high, when housing is bad, when a black man might be president,"

They are equating manipulated gas prices (by their Party no less) and a manipulated housing market (again by their Party) as being the same as an African-American candidate, who has earned the nomination of his party after every single state completed their primary/caucus. Hate really knows no bounds.

And then, the GOP-mindset resorts to their fall-back position of victims:
"What you try not to think about is that maybe if Obama wins, it will create a very demoralizing effect," Doggett said. "Maybe people see him in office, and it's like: 'That's it. It's just too late. Look at what's happened now. We've endured all these defeats, and we've still got a multicultural society.' And then there's just no future for our viewpoint."

What a mess that world must be.

66. Trickle-down theory = supply-side economics
Same thing, different label. After Junior's results these past 7 years and 5 months, they'll have to repackage it again.

allowed for clear-cutting and froze EPA enforcement for the Clean Air Act. At least they're predictably the opposite of how they're labeled.

75. On a stictly geographical note:
Camp Shangri-La = Camp David (for Eisenhower's grandson)

Houston Intercontinental Airport = George Bush Intercontinental Airport/Houston

Washington National Airport = Ronald Reagan Washington International Airport (for a nauseatingly long list of things named after Reagan, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_honors_named_for_Ronald_Reagan)

Boulder Dam = Hoover Dam (there's some question about this one, but deserves to be on the list)

It seems as though the re-re-naming of Cape Kennedy/Cape Canaveral was at the request of local Florida residents, so politics may or may not have played a role.

81. That was the al-Rashid hotel in Baghdad

One of the first things US troops did when they occupied Baghdad was to dig up the intricate tile mosaic of Poppy that was used for years as an insult.

82. Maybe that's not the one I'm thinking of...
...because I recall Pappy was at the opening of some building that had a portrait of him somewhere.

I thought it was on the floor, but I could be mistaken.

I just distinctly remember seeing a picture of him proudly posing with it.

Rep. Jim Moran proposed naming the Bureau of the Debt building, 799 9th Street, NW Washington, DC, for Reagan during House consideration of a bill to rename Washington National Airport.

84. Not sure if this is GOP or just plain dumb - "Caucasian Terrorists"
Yes. That's what Charles Gibson was calling Europeans who have been recruited to be terrorists. As if Arabs, Indians and Saudis are not caucasian.
