Say it with me: Arctic. National. Wildlife. Refuge. (beautiful photos)

NOT "Ann-Warr," goddammit!! Not ANWR. It's the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

"Nearly 300,000 snow-geese arrive from their nesting ground in the Canadian high Arctic
to the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in early autumn. They feed
sixteen hours a day on a type of cotton grass to build fat before they start
their long migration south to places like New Mexico (my home), California, Texas,
and Mexico. During spring and summer months nearly ninety species migrate to the
coastal plain from all six continents to nest and rear their young, to molt, to stage,
and to feed. In my mind through migrations of these birds, Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge gets connected to every land and oceans of the planet.
For several decades, the United States Government has been pushing hard to open up
this coastal plain to oil and gas development."

5. beautiful photos, thanks.
Important for people to see what they could lose by capitulating to the stupidity and greed of the Republican obsession with drilling.

6. Excellent point.
I will stop calling it ANWR.

I prefer to reinforce what it is, as you suggested. Thanks.

8. There was a previous thread on the nomenclature issue.
Here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=3421136&mesg_id=3421136

I like bunkerbuster1's take: Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on first reference anyway; thereafter, just "the Wildlife Refuge" or "Refuge" will do, for me.

10. I have signed every petition on this
and written endlessly to my reps, every time this has come up. I lived in AK for 9 1/2 yrs and a part of me still lives there. It is awesomely beautiful, untouched and a treasure on Earth.

11. The goal of drilling in ANWR is to rape the virgin
I heard a right-wing guy (Grover Norquist maybe?) on NPR a few years ago explaining the zeal for drilling in ANWR. He said that if drilling rights can be gained for ANWR, which he said characterized as 'pristine' then it sets the precedent for driling anywhere.

In other words, how can drilling be stopped anywhere else when it is happening on the most beautiful gem in our nation's crown?
