Iraq to award oil contracts to foreign firms
Source: breitbart

Iraq is set to award oil contracts to a number of multinational firms. Surprise Surprise! And guess which country will be number one on that list for acquisiton?
Now the fruits of ousting Saddam are coming to past.
If not for this war, the carving up of Iraq would never come to pass.
Sure, Iraq will make a profit eventually from all of this one they have paid for the billlions of dollars in infrastructure damage caused by this unholy war for oil.
But you can't put a price on the lives of those countless innocent Iraqis
including many children who died for this blood money. Nor all the misery and hate which ensued because of it all.
I guess Bush and Co think it was all worth it in the long run.

No link yet.

1. I thought Iraqi oil was supposed to pay for the invasion?
Since the war has gone so well I guess we should forget that promise and make the American oil companies even more filthy rich. Makes perfect sense. :sarcasm:

4. That's a violation of international law. We have to pay to rebuild Iraq.
Pottery barn rules still apply. We broke it. We bought it. You don't even want to know what we had to pay the koreans and vietnamese for their chickens that we killed.

2. A link...
BAGHDAD (AFP) Iraq will award contracts to 41 foreign oil firms in a bid to boost production that could give multinationals a potentially lucrative foothold in huge but underdeveloped oil fields, an official said on Sunday.

"We chose 35 companies of international standard, according to their finances, environment and experience, and we granted them permission to extract oil," oil ministry spokesman Asim Jihad told AFP.

They cover Kirkuk field (Shell), Rumaila (BP), Al-Zubair (ExxonMobil), West Qurna Phase I (Chevron and Total), Maysan province development (Shell and BHP Billiton) and the Subba and Luhais fields (Anadarko, Vitol and the UAE's Dome), according to a previous media report.

8. Same same
The “good news” is they’ll be needing a protection force on the ground for those wells for the next 50-100 years,

5. Should the Iraqi government hold the profits of the US
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 02:04 PM by Arctic Dave
companies until the US government pays for the damage and murdered civilians caused by our invasion?
My opinion is, they should. It should be part of the contract, stating since "you broke it, you replace it". If this were the case, I'm sure our oil companies would be less then enthusiastic to exploit their oil.

6. The Iraqi government KNOWS that the US will not "get out" of
Iraq, won't stop its occupation until the award of these contracts occurs. They know the occupation equals a never ending war, their only hope for peace and to get our military out and the fighting to stop is to award these contracts. The leases are NOT for the 50 years our government initially set as part of its "benchmark" hydrocarbon legislation.

Once they get the fields up and the US out, they will do as they want with the leases and the profits. Not until then - they have to cooperate with us until they are able to gain control of their region.

These limited leases are part of their efforts, they have shown some control already as the leases are not for the 50 years our government wanted.

7. Maybe if the New Iraqi govern. had made this deal 6 years ago
many lives would have been saved......

Bush wouldn't let any progress be made there until we had "our" contracts. We invaded - we get to choose how their country and oil fields are run. sarcasm of course
