I don't know why I expected more RE: George Carlin
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 08:03 PM by pepperbear
Watching coverage of his death, FOX, CNN, MSNBC, and CNN HEADLINE all played up the 7 words, his arrest, and his propensity to swear onstage.

No one mentioned the political and social significance of his comedy.

1. There've been some great articles if you look around. Also, I imagine
shows like TDS, Colbert, Letterman, etc., will have great things to say about the real Carlin.

4. Wait until Larry "the fable" guy kicks the bucket
"A part of America died today."
"Real America is in mourning."

6. He's not nearly the redneck he makes himself out to be
Watched an interview with him one time. He's quite intelligent. Knows how to market his character, and it is very much a character.

5. NPR had a nice (albeit hurried) bit on him this morning.
Talked about his transition from the clean-cut comedian and his tremendous influence on an endless stream of successful comedians after him.

9. They cannot report that which they do not understand
They'll call him "iconoclastic" or "counter-cultural" without even looking at the culture he was counter to — but that would figure, since most of the heads were born after he started those riffs and have no real idea of what he was talking about.

So I suggest putting on "Class Clown" or "Occupation: Foole" instead of watching teevee.

11. Oh, I don't know--they report on politics and science all the time

Of course, your point is correct. They're afraid to do a feature on him out of fear of inadvertantly making themselves look like bigger idiots.

15. I don't think there's any fear involved
It's simply dismissal out of ignorance and/or apathy.

I don't recall any specifics in mass media eulogies for Carrol O'Connor, but I'd be willing to bet that the Archie Bunker character was front and center in all of them and portrayed as one that "broke down barriers" without any examination of those barriers at all.

17. Not really - they are indifferent to making themselves look
like idiots. They do that with no shame 24/7. Larry King has a good show.

12. Carlin wasn't exactly on everybody's lips lately. Unless you watched
an HBO pay to play or went to Las Vegas or someplace to see him you would have probably missed him.

because they don't want you to remember he said things like this:

Colonial Rulers of America
"they control all the big media companies, they control all the news and information you hear... they got you by the balls."

21. Our local news had a nice piece from CBS news
They mentioned how Carlin was proud to have been a footnote in the USA's legal system (because of the "dirty words" case that made it to the Supreme Court), and how he had turned from mild-mannered comic to counter-culture icon. All in all, a good report; it was the first one I'd seen about Carlin's death, so I was still in shock as I watched it.
