Except of course the Roman slaves knew they were slaves. And the Romans knew well enough to not like the fact that their army was becomming a Mercenary force. But of course there was widespread support of military conquests that enslaved and pillaged other people.
A Good Roman paid daily homage to the Empire and to the Gods of Rome. A Good Roman delighted in the carnage and suffering of captured combatants in the arenas, and supported the persecution of people of other faiths and cultures. A Good Roman believed that the barbarian peoples would be better off for integration into the Empire, no matter the cost in blood and treasure.
Right now America suffers from far too many "Good Romans".
