16. Yup
I was told by one of the recipients that he was going to heaven and I'm going to hell because I don't go to church anymore. Can you believe the hypocrisy. They may not have written it but most of them wholeheartedly agree

3. Cowards
If you're a racist, come right out with it and be a racist. Say the words. Say what you want to say without dressing it up and then hiding behind the skirts of some sort of specious comparison between blacks in Louisiana and whites in Iowa.

Cowards.

12. How wrong you are!
Two of the biggest assholes on the list of recipients (actually, one was the sender) are board members at the church. They are oozing "class"

:sarcasm:

BTW, I don't really go to church anymore

7. As a resident of Cedar Rapids, IA...
Tell em to Fuck off for me.

There really isn't a comparison. Yes, our tragedy was horrible and when it's all said and done our county will suffer losses of over a billion dollars... per capita, I'd wager that's a close comparison (and no, I have no links, I am guessing here).

But loss of life? I believe there has been one death attributed to our flood. ONE.

We have a mess on our hands, and many, many, needy families.. but they are still alive.

As far as I know, that's where it came from. At least that is who I first heard spewing it.

I'm from Iowa, too.

15. Tell them Thousands dead in New Orleans
Edited on Tue Jun-24-08 05:43 PM by BeatleBoot
Due to a Category 5 Hurricane.

How many dead in the midwest? Did a hurricane hit Iowa?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Katrina

At least 1,836 people lost their lives in Hurricane Katrina and in the subsequent floods, making it the deadliest U.S. hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane. The storm is estimated to have been responsible for $81.2 billion (2005 U.S. dollars) in damage, making it the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history. The catastrophic failure of the flood protection in New Orleans prompted immediate review of the Army Corps of Engineers, which has, by congressional mandate, sole responsibility for design and construction of the flood protection and levee systems. There was also widespread criticism of the federal, state and local governments' reaction to the storm, which resulted in an investigation by the U.S. Congress, and the resignation of Federal Emergency Management Agency director Michael D. Brown. Conversely, the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service were widely commended for accurate forecasts and abundant lead time.<5>

17. The water that swamped the 9th Ward came from Lake Ponchartrain after the storm had passed.
The people of Cedar Rapids tracked the floodwaters coming at them from upriver.

If the water that flooded Cedar Rapids had unexpectedly come up from the Gulf of Mexico -- THEN you could compare the two.

19. If you feel like answering
Edited on Tue Jun-24-08 05:47 PM by wryter2000
Ask how many people in Iowa were herded into a football stadium and left there for days with no working toilets, food, or water. Ask how many were prevented from walking across a bridge (at gunpoint) to get help at a place where there was power. Ask how many were stranded for days on their roofs with signs "help me." Ask how many had to wait for 5 days to get any help at all from FEMA. Ask how many had mercenaries patroling the streets with automatic weapons.

When you get through with that, ask them to prove that any of the Katrina victims actually raped anyone. You might also add that the "looting" in NOLA was largely people looking for clothing and food because they were getting no help. The only real case of "looting" I recall was police making off with expensive cars.

Then, be sure to hit "reply to all."

22. Yeah
I heard plenty of good responses on the radio. I think Stephanie Miller? Not to downplay the damage but, to refute one of the claims, the government IS there helping out. Another thing I heard was that Katrina victims were not allowed to enter neighboring towns? They were forced to stay put? I'm doing some looking before I reply to all the racists on that FWD.

27. That's what I meant about the bridge
They tried walking over the bridge to Gretna, but the Gretna police were on the other end of the bridge with guns keeping them out.

I remember no one less than Geraldo Rivera on Fox yelling, "Just let them leave. There's power over there. Let them walk out."

Hurricane Katrina vs Devastating Iowa 500 Year Flood

Why aren't all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons and asking for help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?
Why isn't the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved the problem?
Where are all the FEMA trucks and trailers?
Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in Chicago?
When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines?
Where is Sean Penn in his rescue boat and the Dixie Chicks?
Where are all the 24/7 lurid news tales of cannibalism and unnecessary drownings?
Why did Iowans evacuate so prematurely; why are they not holed up in deathtrap sports centers?
Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?
When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a 'vanilla' Iowa, because that's the way God wants it?
Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?
Why are the Iowans not complaining more and demanding to be saved?
How come in about 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again?

24. Same basic line of BS
I actually got emailed a vid last week called "if I were a terrorist"(??) It was from a different RW email friend but the vid was basically talking about the failures of the Bush administration. I was surprised it was forwarded. Maybe the senders just like being angry at everything or maybe, just maybe, reality is dawning on them.

28. This email is a retread.
The only alteration is that they insert the name of the current disaster. I got one like this comparing Hurricane Katrina with the snowsorm in Denver that shut the city down for a few days. It's probably on Snopes. I don't know why people have to do this shit. Nothing was like Katrina.
