Rove picks the wrong metaphor to slam Obama
By: Steve Benen on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 at 12:50 PM - PDT
Karl Rove has made it clear on multiple occasions that he actively dislikes Barack Obama — if there’s a more helpful testament to the strength of Obama’s character, it doesn’t come to mind — and he continues to make his criticisms of the Democratic candidate more and more personal.

“Even if you never met him, you know this guy,” Rove said, per Christianne Klein. “He’s the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by.”

Of all the metaphors Rove could have used to attack the first credible African-American candidate for the presidency, he had to go with “the guy at the country club”? Seriously? Jake Tapper noted, accurately, that Obama “wouldn’t be admitted into many country clubs that members of the Capitol Hill Club frequent.”

What’s more, this is also surprisingly off-message for Rove. For months, Rove has sought to characterize Obama as a dangerous outsider who we don’t really know and can’t trust. Everything about him, the argument goes, is “foreign.” The various far-right smears — about Obama’s religion, his family, his name, his patriotism — are all part of the same conservative frame.

Now, however, Obama’s part of the country-club set? Hanging around with a martini? If I’m not mistaken, Rove is talking about the ultimate insider — which is the opposite of the message Rove was emphasizing up until very recently. Can’t these guys pick one smear and go with it?

And finally, Greg Sargent notes the irony of Rove’s attack.

It should also be noted, of course, that Rove took a man who actually is a country club denizen who makes “snide comments” about others — that would be George W. Bush — and turned him into a regular Joe. Meanwhile, the guy who would struggle for admittance to some of these exclusive enclaves — Obama — is now “the guy at the country club.” Rovian up-is-downism at its finest.

Exactly. Rove’s description sounds spot-on like Bush — right down to the “snide comments” he makes about people who pass him by.

4. the beautiful date part is also funny
Obama has been married a long time and no one has accused him of infidelity. In contrast, McCain is a known adulterer.

5. So can we finally put that Rove "Boy Genius" meme to rest?
And how's that "permanent Republican majority" goal working out for ya, Karl?

Why he's on TV spouting nonsense and not in a jail cell is beyond me.

7. Karl Rove actively dislikes anybody smarter and more personable than him..
which is why he loves the little lord chimp so much. Rove sounds more like a pathetic bitter angry shell of a man than a genius to me.

9. The first thing I thought...
...when I saw Rove's comment was: pudgy, unappealing K-k-k-karl Rove is telegraphing his own personal insecurities and reliving whatever real and imagined slights he suffered in high school. I would have said college, but then K-k-k-karl never graduated, did he? Ha ha...

14. Incredible display
of intellectual dishonesty and incredible ignorance. First, as stated by Jake Tapper, Obama "wouldn’t be admitted into many country clubs that members of the Capitol Hill Club frequent." Next, I doubt Rove and his insiders would be members of a club would admit Sen. Obama. Then, Rove, member of the same party that has made a career of promoting inequality, to imply that some magical level of equality has been reached is the height of both intellectual dishonesty and irony.

They should lay off the drugs.

21. I feel like crying
Not for Obama, but for our democracy because millions of voters are stupid enough to be persuaded by this stuff.

A black guy with a Swahili name whose father abandoned him and who worked as a community organizer is an elitist and the dullard son of an ex-president who seems to be sociopathic is a trustworthy man of the people.

People fall for this shit, and its so damn sad. We really don't deserve better as a democracy anymore in my view.
