My son has an appointment tomorrow to get laid off |
|
He has to drive to work to get laid off....! (about an hour, round trip) He will lose his medical/dental plan, and if rehired, will have to wait a year to get them back. I am so worried about him.

3. dont drive to the office so the bastards can do it to him, make them phone it in |
|
Please be sure that he is cool, calm, and collected. Also he might want to avoid the place if others are getting laid off too (workplace shootings)

Unless he'll lose his unemployment benefits for not appearing, which sounds like bullshit, I say fuck them or tell them to pay for his gas.

I'll send good thoughts your son's way that something better will open up for him quickly.
It's a shame there's no dedication or loyalty to employees from corporate America any longer. :(

8. They're probably going to push him to sign a release. |
|
So he might have some negotiating power.

If he has med/dental for a short period of time have him get a checkup at both before they expire. They likely want him to sign something, I'd see if they would FedEx the doc to me and do the layoff over the phone. Two hours wasting gas to get laid off is a waste of time and money, neither of which he likely has in abundance right now.
Best of luck to him.

11. If some medial ailment is found now won't it be considered a preexisting condition? |

And then will likely not be covered when he does get insurance in the future?

your state may have a minimum-pay requirement, such as salaried folks get a full day's pay for showing up. hourly people get 4 hours for showing up. his medical benefits should continue through the end of the current month, so make sure he goes in today for a checkup, calls in for all his medications. if the firm expects him to sign a paper, he might consider telling the employer he'll review it with an attorney and the state employment department (do this for sure), that he'll report for work tomorrow--punch in--to discuss it.
why drive? take the bus.
good luck to the kid.
Edit: BTW, Nightwatcher. Your sig offers dangerous advice. In earthquakes, more people are crushed when hiding under furniture than by collapsing architectural members. Beams and such are unlikely to fall directly on a prone person, leaving an airspace and wiggle room. OTOH, if the beam hits the tabletop, all that force and gravity push against the flat surface.

15. He has the right to continue coverage, though at his own expense |
|
Look up The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986 (a.k.a. COBRA).

16. COBRA is a sad trick though.. It costs a BUNCH |
|
and most people cannot afford it when they have lost their job:(
Our COBRA (back in 95) cost us $825 a month.. We carried the load because we HAD to, but many cannot..

18. Yes, but in some cases it is better than letting coverage lapse |

It depends on the individual situation.

17. That sucks.. Hugs to your son.. |
|
Please ask him to not sign anything hastily.. He might be signing a "resignation", and could lose unemployment benefits..
He should ask to have them copy the paperwork, let him take them home & read them thoroughly, and FAX anything back to them..
He should also "clock-in" on that last day, and make sure he has ALL of any personal stuff he keeps there.
His nervousness and eagerness to get it over quickly, could affect any benefits he might have coming..
I assume he has no union :(... but maybe he could make a stop at an unemployment office first, and find out what he's entitled to BEFORE he faces them..

I work evenings.
In Feb. I was told by my boss that "I had to come in for the employee meeting". Knew something was up.
The company notified us that they had to due to a financing contract outsource about 1/2 of the jobs, certain departments where being out sourced, mine included either at the end of August or the end of the year depending on who it was.
So at the end of the year, in theory might be later, I will be laid off. The good thing is I get 1 week of pay for every year I was here, 23 years, and they will pay for my IT certification testing and tools.
In some ways I am glad it isn't immediate but it is a pain living with the knowledge that the ax is going to drop.
Good luck to your son and any others who are joining the ranks of the laid off.

23. I offered him schooling while he's unemployed |

I said I would pay for every class he passed. I will pay for 2 or three initial classes, then I will pay for another class for every one he passes. It's time.
