19. how do you say that in French?
they had a place in Georgetown called Au Pied de Cochon.

wonder if it's still there

HA! it has an international communist SPY conspiracy background

I lived there fifteen years, and never knew that:

http://dcist.com/2004/09/10/an_obituary_yur.php

But the historian in us makes us feel sort of sad with the arrival of Five Guys in Georgetown for a piece of Cold War history has been lost: The Vitaly Yurchenko Memorial Bathroom. It was at the old Au Pied du Cochon, the charming French bistro with crummy food and rude wait staff, where in 1985, a KGB spy who defected to the United States, escaped his CIA handler and redefected to the Soviet Union.

Vitaly Yurchenko left to use the restroom, climbed out the window to Dumbarton Street and proceeded up Wisconsin Avenue to the Soviet Embassy. Another account has him escaping though the kitchen and ending up at the State Department, which confuses DCist.

2. let her say whatever she wants. She's history in January.
:woohoo:

she didn't run for her House seat this time to try for the Senate seat, and she lost the primary.

she's unemployed as of 01/09

6. Why
You know, I get what you're saying and I agree with you. But why do you have to use a gender based slur against her? She may be butch, but calling her "he" is petty and cruel to those who may agree with you who also don't conform to gender stereotypes.

I'm not telling you not to think it, but why do you have to say it and hurt feelings. DU probably has a higher percentage of gender non-conformists than the general population does. Think of your audience. I would wager that most women as butch as she is are lesbians and actually agree with you on most issues. Why would you call her "he" in a snide way when your audience most likely consists of women right-wingers love to call he to make fun of them.

Can you at least try not to be cruel when you make fun of people you don't approve of?

9. point taken
I thought about that, and part of the reason I couched her/him/it in those terms was to see what sort of reaction it got

is 'it' OK?

thanks for being polite, though, and I'm sorry to offend you

18. I try
To be polite. Thing is, I can't stand the woman and it's hard to not make fun of her, even though I myself am a very butch woman. So I understand 100% where you're coming from and I'm even tempted to call her names myself. But then I think about how I'm treated by assholes who think women who aren't "womanly enough" are fair game.

It's just that "they" use stuff like that to try to put us in our place and it's hurtful when people who are our allies do the same thing.

Thanks for understanding and not calling me shrill or too sensitive. It's rare enough that I greatly appreciate it.

20. again, I'm very sorry, and feel for you, believe me, for several reaons. now. know Emile Norman?
PBS show last night. hope it's available where you are

great artist, wonderful story of him and his partner. made me cry in parts

here's the website

http://www.pbs.org/emilenorman/

he did a stunning window at the Masonic Temple in San Fran. I wish I'd known about it when I was there.

you need to see this, and spread his story around...one of the most inspiring shows I've seen on PBS in a long time

the window...not stained glass, but ground particles (mostly wood, if not all), arranged, then put between two pieces of plastic

go here for the whole thing, but you have to add the "http:" without the ""

have a lot better grasp on how absurd that whole thing was than she does.

16. Contessa
I call her The Airheaded Contessa

She appears as dumb as a rock.

It is a play on The Barefoot Contessa (a cooking/foodie personality, actually).

I sometimes get called sexist for calling her an airhead. I truly have no idea why.
