Please....can somebody help me with "Active X?" I can't get on |
|
my satellite radio, I think, because I can't find it in programs, files, or anywhere else, and the tech guy for Sirius says that's why I can't get radio anymore
I want to uninstall and can't find it
Norton help is no help, and they put me on permanent hold
so, please...
and thanks

1. Bon chance ...... I'll bet **anything** its Norton or, if you have have it and have played ......... |
|
..... with it, TweakUI.
Every time I have a problem on any computer, it is one of those. TweakUI is not all that big a deal. I have Norton on everything and it is generally okay, but keeps a tight reign on everything. I have Norton 360. There is a way to apply 'rules' for any program and I usually go there to fix stuff.
Bon Chance!

22. You need to do something in TweakUI only if you already did something. |
|
What I'm saying is to undo any changes you may have made previously. Nothing there that you would initiate now will help.

23. I did the tweak, but couldn't figure out what to do with it...couldn't find Active X there. |
|
is there something else I migt try?
I don't think it's Active X anymore. that was the only thing that may have happened around tbe time Sirius stopped working
thx, though

2. AciteX is an open door to your system developed and installed by M$. |
|
The file you're probably looking for has the extension .ocx.
If you are concerned about security, you are better off with an alternative as activex controls are notorious entries for hackers and script kiddies.

3. I know. that's why I want to close it, but I can't find it anywhere, including |
|
add/delete programs, search files, etc.
no ideas on how to find the thing?
I'm no good at this, and Norton is a labyrinth of dead ends, incorrectly phrased questions

17. Maybe try this, Click on tools |
|
go down to manage add-on and clik on enable or disable add-ons then up at the top scrowl down to downloaded activeX controls, select it and see if you find it there. I just checked mine and I don't have any downloaded activeX's. This is where you can remove activeX's on your systems.
Hope this is some help and if not then I apologize for sending you on a wild goose chase :-)

5. "Active X" is the name of a Microsoft technology category, not a program. |

6. ActiveX is not a "program" |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-25-08 06:58 PM by RoyGBiv
For purposes of simplification, it's a part of Internet Explorer. You can turn off or on via IE in the Internet options.
And I'll echo what Junkdrawer said. Get a different tech guy.

9. Can't remember exactly where it is ... |
|
I haven't used IE in so long I've forgotten, and I use Linux, so I can't check it.
Seems like it was Tools > Internet Options
But, there could be a tab somewhere you have to click to get to the correct place, and I think there are more than one ActiveX option. If he says you need to turn it off completely, just look for that.
I'm not sure how turning *off* ActiveX really would make something else work, though.

10. In IE6, you can turn Active X on and off at Tools/Internet Options.... |
|
go to the Security tab and click the Custom Level button.
If something isn't working, chances are you need to turn Active X on. BE WARNED: that makes your computer more vulnerable.

12. I found that, and it looks to be disabled. I'm pretty sure it was disabled before, though. |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-25-08 07:19 PM by Gabi Hayes
Norton made me activate it temporarily to do some sort one button cleanup
wonder if it was a clone scam or something
am I going to be visited by aliens
there are seven settings controlling active X
here they are, and thanks for bearing with, I hope:
Auto prompt Active X Controls...disable
Binary and script behaviors......enable
Download signed Active X Controls....prompt
Download unsigned Active X Controls....disable
Initialize and script Active X Controls not marked as safe for scripting...disable
Run Active X Controls and plugins.....Enable
Script Active X Controls marked as safe for scripting.....enable
what do I want to have enabled/disabled/prompted, etc., if I want to disable Active X momentarily to see if that affects getting Sirius?
and if it works that way, am I too vulnerable to leave it like that
thx a lot

Having it on at all makes you vulnerable. That's just the way it is. Your settings are probably about as safe as you can be.
But some services require it. I suspect, since the tech even brought it up, it's required for the service you're using. (This is a good argument for not using that service, btw.) I am still having trouble thinking of a way that having it on would prevent a service from working.
Anyway, you have it enabled, so if it isn't working, you can do what the tech said and disable it.
"Run Active X Controls and plugins....." Enable (change to disable)
If that works, let me know, 'cause I haven't had a good fainting spell today.
I suspect you have some other issue, but I haven't a clue what it might be. I also suspect the tech guy was trying to get you off the phone because he didn't have a clue either.

21. tried that, rebooted, and it went back to the default settings, despite disabling it |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-25-08 07:53 PM by Gabi Hayes
where you said, and at the tools>manage addons>disable
nothing helped
so, at default security settings, is Active X on or off?
here's what's up again:
Auto prompt Active X Controls...disable
Binary and script behaviors......enable
Download signed Active X Controls....prompt
Download unsigned Active X Controls....disable
Initialize and script Active X Controls not marked as safe for scripting...disable
Run Active X Controls and plugins.....Enable
Script Active X Controls marked as safe for scripting.....enable

|
I don't have that option.
All in all, I'm guessing ActiveX isn't your problem.
I go back to "Get a different tech support guy"

11. They are listed if you are using IE |
|
Go to -Tools-, then -Internet Options-, then -Programs-, then -Manage add ons-. From there you can select 2 different options from the drop down menu. You should be able to -Add ons currently loaded into Internet Explorer and you will see a list of installed programs. Some of them will be active X and some will be others. You can select the one you want to shut off and then select -Disable-.

it's already disabled for several of them, but I want to maybe enable it again, briefly, to see if it affects reception
do you know which buttons need to be in which position?
I don't want to screw myself any more than is necessary
thx
PS....see post number 12 for configuration of buttons

16. Downloaded Active X programs.. |
|
Gabi, the actual Active X programs which have been installed can be found here:
Internet Options> Browsing history section (front tab)> Settings > Objects.
That will open an explorer window with a list of Active X controllers. You can delete the program from that location.
The items which you listed above are IE settings related to Active X, not the Active X files themselves.

I'm starting to think Active X isn't the problem, though, as I changed all the disables to enable, as well as the prompt
