1. Are you seriously complaining about this? This is pathetic
I really think it is really sad when Dems reduce themselves to attacking wivers and mothers and play stupid things like the "age" card when there is such a lot a real stuff to attack our opponent on. And, if she is alert and capable, why shouldn't she drive? So she has speeding tickets? So what. I do too but I am not 96 so no one cares that much.

3. Actually, I said it was stupid to go after Cindy for cookiegate

and I've said bringing his family into it was a mistake.

I only posted it, because the idea of a 96 year old woman speeding around and getting busted by the cops was quite funny to me.

As for her being capable...it would just be a lot easier to get a driver. I assume she has the funds, so it would be less of a risk. Anyone that says they aren't bothered about a 96 year old driving should volunteer to be a passanger while they do drive.

20. So what, I just got a speeding ticket last week and I'm 69 years old.
Do you think that I am too old to be driving?

2. My great grandpa was driving just fine at 98.
The last day he lived he could still walk faster than us great grandkids. The only real thing age seemed to do was make him take naps starting at around 80 and got a little longer as he got older. You had to talk a little louder for him to hear you but not much, and he had to start wearing glasses full time somewhere around 85. The man died chopping wood on his farm. Sudden fatal heart attack. He was a rarity and I suspect McCain's mom is too.

Just remember, Bob Hope was still doing USO tours at 90.

6. I can't lie, the idea of anyone over 90 driving makes me feel a bit weird
Edited on Thu Jun-26-08 07:21 PM by galaxy21
It just isn't something I'm comfortable with. If there's an accident, they're more likely to get injured/killed as well.

17. No more dangerous than
anyone any age with diabetes or heart disease that "could" have a health emergency while behind the wheel. -- and certainly no more dangerous than most new drivers. The key is coordination and judgement ability. Sure, MOST 90+ people no longer have the ability to think and act fast enough to drive, but if someone does, and has not proved to endanger others, then they should be permitted.

Though I am all for a much more rigorous test before a driver's license is granted or renews for ALL people. - though I think it would be cost prohibitive for DMV to test every driver every 4-6 years.

:)

Ok...only a joke. I don't want to overgeneralize

OTOH, there is some truth about being concerned, just based on science

13. I think a woman that age who has more than one should be pulled in for good
Her reflexes are no way in the condition they need to be to be speeding around my country men.

...as well as the young, the poor, the disabled, and many others.

How many little children does grandma need to run over to get some light rail?

until she fell from her attic and broke her back. She lived another few years after recovering.

19. I'm only 68 but I have noticed (with alarm) that my ability to focus
on driving as I used to has declined, altho not by a lot. I am much more careful as a result.

I share your concern. There's a reason that 70 year old pilots don't fly our commercial planes.

My mother stopped driving in her mid 80s after she was in an accident that injured her sister (not badly, but it shook mother up quite a bit). It was a relief to me that she came to that conclusion on her own and that my brother was around to schlep her places she needed to go.

FWIW, I don't much like the idea of a 72 year old being president either. OK, it's age discrimination but I'm the first to admit that I couldn't carry a 40 hour workweek any more and I'm in good health. But I also realize that not everyone my age feels this way. And I also realize that younger drivers can be a lot more dangerous on the road than old people. However, I am skeptical as you are about a 96 year old behind the wheel...

22. That's great! You must love your job or need it.
I left a highly stressful job at a highly stressful point in my life, taking care of both my mother's and my brother's affairs after each of them were in care facilities back in Texas. I also had 3 grandchildren with a 4th on the way and I wanted to see them more often. Ithink my ability to take the stress had declined. My blood pressure was far too high and I wasn't sleeping.

Oh, I was also trying to finish a Master's degree, but I enjoyed that so much that I was sorry when I finally got the degree!
