Kucinich on Taking Impeachment off the Table
6/24/08

http://www.c-spanarchives.org/congress/?q=node/77531&id=8591673

"When the leadership of this House said back in October of 2006 that impeachment is off the table, what they did is they set the stage for the administration ignoring the subpoenas of the Congress for information. Once the administration understood that they did not have to comply with the law and that Congress essentially took away the one power that Congress has to compel the administration to respect Congress as a coequal branch of government, once that was taken away, the administration
basically just decided it wasn't going to appear in front of Congress to answer questions, they wouldn't produce documents or papers that were relevant to congressional investigations.

Congress is a coequal branch of government. It is urgent that we reestablish our coequality, that we create conditions of a check and balance of administrative abuse of power. This isn't a Republican matter, it is not a Democratic matter, it is a matter for our country. We need to have the Congress be strong. We need to hold this administration accountable."

1. Absolutely! That was my first reaction to the announcement, too.
Bush just got permission to thumb his nose at Congress and all of us who have been fighting to get the truth out in fresh air. He didn't take much time before he did just that.

The other thing that I thought of that day was, why did she even do it? It seemed to just come out of the blue, like she was told to go out and announce that impeachment was off the table. If something triggered it, I didn't and still don't know what it was.

I'll never forgive her for that.

3. Imagine telling our children that we do not like what they have
done and then turn around and say 'If you do it again you will still not be punished'

:crazy:

15. As to the whys...
DK comes right to the point there as well, "The Democratic Leadership Council's agenda is indistinguishable from the Republican Neoconservative agenda,"

7. His Point Is Valid --- But There Is No "Co-Equality"
Congress can remove exec and judicial branch members. They cannot reciprocate. The "coequal" meme serves only the neofascist instinct/movement/powerplayers.

Congress is (supposed to be) "king." And that was the intention -- as it is closest to the real sovereigns, the (former) American People. Taking impeachment "off the table" makes Congress literally impotent. And we've been seeing the results.

Why should a lawless regime bother even reading a hollow subpoena, or do anything but chuckle at a veto override, or a court ruling on any circumstance from any level of court?

Failure to impeach quite literally fails to:

...support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic;

Their stated concern for their electoral/political fortunes means that they do not:

...bear true faith and allegiance to the same;

Consequently they are refusing to:

...well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office

Which leaves the once-sovereigns of a once-great nation just one thing to say:

So help me God.

16. Even if it is off the table, you don't ANNOUNCE it.
At least keep the semblance of a threat out there!

27. Dennis is spot on! The man has integrity AND brains. He must be lonely.
And the sad thing is it shouldn't be much longer before the media & the Congress resume their voracious appetite for holding a president accountable.

Next guy won't be dealing with carte blanche to rape & pillage everything in sight.... he'll be watched carefully for any small misstep & be made an example again.
