Winfield MO, levee just broke. 150 homes at risk, entire town
likely to die a wet death. This town has about 800 residents, most of whom followed FEMA advice and have no flood insurance.

3. Republican gov't at work, again.
I wonder if the people of Winfield, MO agree with Ronald Reagan when he said "The nine most frightening words in the english language are - I'm from the gov't and I'm here to help"??

4. Crap. That levee needed to hold on for only a bit longer.
sigh.

It's been a tough year for the Midwest.

Here's a breach in Indiana earlier this month.

5. Weren't They Warned (Kind of) Early Friday Morning? Evacuated?
I don't know every detail of the story and I feel for them and all, but why do people stay put in the face of impending doom. I know it's not always easy to just up and leave your home, especially with small children, pets, older people or disabled people or if you don't have transportation. I understand the mentality of "this is my home and I'm not leaving", but is a material possession with your life and your families? I know a home is the biggest investment most people make. That's understandable, but damn! Don't just sit there! Was an evacuation plan in place and not one where you pile everybody into a convention center and leave them on the floor.

7. when I moved to suden suburbs of Chi-town,
my partner was a bit miffed when I kept seeking higher ground, even relatively speaking. Even in the flat parts of Illinois, tis nice to be dry, high.
