'She was so nice'

But that 'nice' Chase teller was siphoning away 86-year-old Jessie McDonald's cash, the public guardian's office says -- and so far Chase hasn't paid it back

June 24, 2008

BY ANNIE SWEENEY AND DAN ROZEK Staff Reporters

Jessie McDonald and her husband, Jim "Mac" McDonald, worked hard and saved hard during their 61 years of marriage. snip

Together, the couple -- who never had children -- saved $400,000, placing the cash at Chase Bank.

But, according to court papers filed recently by the Cook County public guardian's office, a bank teller took advantage of Jessie McDonald's failing mind to scam her of most of that savings. All told, the teller allegedly siphoned more than $300,000 -- money that paid for everything from jewelry to tuition bills to home insurance.

So far, the bank has yet to give McDonald the money back -- even though the teller has been fired and a branch manager disclosed in court hearings that McDonald had been fleeced. snip

If Chase doesn't repay the $300,000, McDonald might end up on public aid, Harris said.

1. As far as I'm concerned the bank is responsible
The money was stolen by a bank employee on the job in the bank. And $300k is pocket change to Chase.

Bank agrees to pay customer who was robbed by teller

June 24, 2008

BY ANNIE SWEENEY Crime Reporter
Chase Bank agreed today to repay hundreds of thousands of dollars a teller allegedly stole from a longtime customer.

A check in the amount of $301,494.41 will be cut to Jessie McDonald, 86, whose savings were pillaged by an employee who befriended her and helped her with her banking at the downtown branch, officials said.

Chase spokesman Tom Kelly said the check would be written to McDonald, who is under the care of the Cook County public guardian’s office. The decision came the same day McDonald’s story was featured in the Chicago Sun-Times.

5. Cheapest option
Especially when the alternative would have been court, legal costs, additional damages, and the original amount.

They didn't have a leg to stand on.

7. $301,494.41 that was the amount which the employee stole! And the bank
...dragged its feet to repay? I would expect and demand back interest on the money as well
