Durbin Statement on Today's Supreme Court Ruling on Handgun Laws
Thursday, June 26, 2008

– United States Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement today following the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller:

“This school year alone, over 20 Chicago public school students have been killed by guns. And in April there was a 10-day stretch in Chicago where there were 48 shootings.”

“When the equivalent of an entire classroom full of kids is killed by gun violence, it underscores the need for common-sense, effective gun safety measures that respond to the level of violence in our communities."

“Acknowledging that gun ownership is a basic right does not absolve us from the constitutional and moral responsibility to protect innocent children."

1. Hey Dick, you have a criminal control problem.
Dick, you do happen to recall that gun ownership in Chicago is already illegal, right? I don't see how this ruling is going to make matters any worse than they already are. You see Dick, criminals are not at all concerned as to the legality of their actions. Gun laws are only obeyed by law abiding citizens, not the criminal thugs killing these children.

8. Hey, let's outlaw killing people.
If we can pass a law against killing other people, then surely nobody else will die in the streets. Criminals pay attention to laws like that.

2. Well clearly we need to ban gun ownership in Chicago.
That would clearly solve this problem.

4. How to "reduce crime"
1) Living wage
2) Full employment,
3) No inflation.

5. You forgot the biggest one.
End the war on "some drugs". There is a lot of money being made by the underground drug economy. Disputes can not be settled in court.

6. Well one more added incentive for crooks to enter your home.
Guns are as valuable as jewelry and sterios. If more people keep them in their homes then more homes will be targets for the criminals..Also more innocents will get shot..Ain't America great?

9. I am certain that you can substantiate your assertion.
Please do so by providing home invasion statistics that show that homes in areas more restrictive firearms regulations are less likely to be burglarized than homes in areas with more permissive firearms laws.
