Oil Rationing?
Okay, maybe the situation is not yet that dire. But, when the time comes when effects of the price of oil is limiting people's ability to eat and get to work, I have to wonder when it will be time to sacrifice some of the luxuries that we can fore-go. Car races? Air shows? Saving gas by having speed limits? Couldn't corporations use more collaborative software for their meetings instead of flying people all over the country for a face to face? Could kids walk a little farther to get to school instead of being bussed short distances, if it could be done safely? Turn off the air-conditioning? Turn down the thermostat for winter heating? What else? What are people doing in their personal lives?
If I can afford to squander oil, does that mean that I should?

5. No shortage?
Okay, but even if there is no shortage now, even if this "crisis" is caused by speculators, etc., it is inevitable that oil is a limited resource. Think of this as a wake-up call. Hopefully, we can develop other energy resources before the real end of the road comes. I still believe that we have a duty to use our resources wisely.

3. At $4 a gallon, they want to sell us as much as we'll buy
There won't be a "shortage" until and if the price falls.

6. No shortage. Price will hit $8 and number of buyers will perfectly match number of sellers
You can only have shortage if you are trying to set prices below the market clearing price.
