The Aptera Electric Car!

Aptera Electric Car Claims 300 Miles Per Gallon Fuel Efficiency

(NaturalNews) Electric car maker Aptera claims that the electric-gasoline hybrid version of its new Typ-1 vehicle gets 300 miles per gallon. The vehicle will be available early in 2008(don't they mean 2009?) for less than $30,000. The Typ-1 comes in two versions: fully electric...

NaturalNews) Electric car maker Aptera claims that the electric-gasoline hybrid version of its new Typ-1 vehicle gets 300 miles per gallon. The vehicle will be available early in 2008 for less than $30,000.

The Typ-1 comes in two versions: fully electric or hybrid. According to Aptera, the electric model can go 120 miles on single charge, and can be recharged from any normal 110-volt power outlet. The hybrid can go 600 miles on a full tank, and either version of can reach top speeds of 95 miles per hour.

The three-wheeled Typ-1 seats two in the front, in addition to a small seat in back that can fit an infant's car seat. If this back seat is removed, it converts into cargo space large enough to fit, according to the company, either 15 bags of groceries or two full-sized golf bags.

The Typ-1 has several other features that set it apart from other conventional, hybrid or electric vehicles. Instead of side mirrors, the car contains embedded cameras all along the sides and back that transmit to a screen in front of the instrument panel, displaying a 180-degree rear view. Solar panels built into the roof power a climate-control system that is always running to keep the interior temperature from falling too far above or below a certain point.

Safety features in the vehicle include driver and passenger side airbags and a front-end crumple zone. The car has built-in GPS navigation, a CD/DVD/MP3 player, and XM satellite radio, as well as a USB port that can be used to charge mobile devices such as laptops or MP3 players. Radio-frequency identification chips embedded in the key and car make it so the key does not need to be inserted to open doors or start the engine.

The Typ-1 is available for pre-order on Aptera's web site, for a refundable deposit of $500. At present, only California residents can order - the company expects, however, to eventually deliver around the country.

18. That's weird, you would be safer in a car with crumple zones...
In fact, cars of the type you mention are considered some of the more dangerous today. With an all steel frame and body, there is little to dissipate the force of a collision, so you, and whatever passengers you have, end up taking the brunt of it, and fatalities in those things were much higher than fatalities in newer cars that aren't made the same way. As far as the Hummer, well, it really depends on the type of collision, and whether the Hummer flips over or not.

15. The Aptera exceeds Federal safety standards for passanger cars anyway
better than a lot of other vehicles on the road.

21. federal safety standards generally don't reflect what happens in real world collisions.
if someone was driving around with their baby in the back if the aptera, and got rear-ended by a 72 olds 98, someone would be in the market for a new baby.

24. As for me,
As for me, I wouldn't want to be in an accident in any vehicle; regarldess of size, weight, or safety features-- especially with a baby in the back.

26. nobody "wants" to be in any accident....but this vehicle seems particularly unsuited-
for collisions with anything except similarly small/fragile vehicles.

for instance- where are the bumpers?

28. Like bicycles and motorcycles.
"particularly unsuited for collisions with anything except similarly small/fragile vehicles"

Like bicycles and motorcycles. Yet I still feel safer and more aware on a motorbike than I do in a Hummer.

29. i've been on the expressway in a hummer, and on a motorcycle-
there's absolutely no comparison as to which felt safer and more secure. by FAR.

and if you think it would be the motorcycle, you're goofy.

in the vast majority of accidents, cars end upright on four wheels- but i've never once seen an accident involving a motorcycle where the bike ended upright on both wheels. go figure...

31. I imagine many people may think that.
"and if you think it would be the motorcycle, you're goofy."

I imagine many people may think that. However, there are simply some people who feel that motorcycles allow a greater degree of control, flexibility and awareness to *avoid* an on coming accident.

But if the "goofiness" sobriquet is what you consider an apt description of those people, then so be it. Big deal. I seriously doubt that many motorcycle drivers (myself among them) really consider your own personal perspectives on what may or may not be the most effective, efficient, or safe method of travel.

34. There is something to be said about motorcycles though.
Yes, if there is an accident, I'd much rather be in the Hummer.

However, that is only part of the equation. In a car, I have a radio, cell phone, other people, more distractions, less visibility, less maneuverability.

When I'm on my motorcycle, I'm FOCUSED.

Is it safer, no way.

Is it funner, HELL YES!

37. All other things being equal...
All other things being equal, I'd much rather be riding a Yamaha 750 when quickly coming up on a wreck-- a few times in the past, I've simply been able to swerve through narrow openings in the confusion caused by wrecks while on my bike rather than driving through another car or truck.

(Though I'm the first to admit, the last time it happened, I was three seconds from peeing on myself).

Always good to see a nice attitude on a thread on a Monday morning-- they're becoming a rarity these day! :hi:

It almost looks like something inspired by the movie Logan's Run.
Of course, in that movie, there were no personal vehicles. There were these white things you sit in that fly through public transit tubes.

35. The motorcycle is cool, but it'd need twice the range to be practical for me
Range: 35 / 60 miles (power / Economy)

That means you are limited to about 16 / 30 miles one way
