FreeRepublic.com EXPOSED in major WaPo article as conduit for disinformation
Fasten your seatbelts for this one. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/27/AR2008062703781_3.html">WaPohttp://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/27/AR2008062703781_3.html"> has published a http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/27/AR2008062703781_3.html">detailed and hard-hittinghttp://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/27/AR2008062703781_3.html"> article about the origin of those Obama rumors, and it merits a complete read; the quites below may constitute more Fair Use than usual, so do forgive me, Mods...

An Attack That Came Out of the Ether

Scholar Looks for First Link in E-Mail Chain About Obama

By Matthew Mosk
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, June 28, 2008; Page C01

The e-mail landed in Danielle Allen's queue one winter morning as she was studying in her office at the Institute for Advanced Study, the renowned haven for some of the nation's most brilliant minds. The missive began: "THIS DEFINITELY WARRANTS LOOKING INTO."

...

The use of "their equivalency" and the spelling of "Kuran" instead of "Koran" made the sentence her point of departure.

That search showed that the first mention of the e-mail on the Internet had come more than a year earlier. A participant on the conservative Web site FreeRepublic.com posted a copy of the e-mail on Jan. 8, 2007, and added this line at the end: "Don't know who the original author is, but this email should be sent out to family and friends."

Allen discovered that theories about Obama's religious background had circulated for many years on the Internet. And that the man who takes credit for posting the first article to assert that the Illinois senator was a Muslim is Andy Martin.

...

Poring over these early articles on the topic, Allen noticed what she thought was an important pattern. In each instance, someone had posted the articles on the Free Republic Web site, prompting a discussion involving the same handful of people, with several expressing a desire to spread the word about Obama's supposed faith.
So what are you waiting for? http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/27/AR2008062703781_3.html">Go read it!

1. And to think, it was their oh so beautiful spelling which gave it away
We know the Free Republic was the nerve center for attacks on Bush's opponents, the lie that the Killian documents were forged, the attacks on Andy Stephenson, and now the bigoted attacks on Obama.

But we also know that there aren't any Mensa meetings going on over there.

7. The flak over the Wellstone memorial service also began there
I watched it all happen. Lists of media links began being posted with suggestions to bombard outlets with letters of outrage.

14. And Lara Logan.
As for the other claims, pals admitted that Logan had a one-time fling with CNN reporter Ware - but denied that there was any sort of fight between him and Burkett in Baghdad.

"There was no screaming match," the pal said.

Tale of the love fight first broke on the freerepublic.com in December.

Conduit is right. Remember how the freeper who first posted about the Killian documents was just a lawyer who happened to know about type fonts and then was later revealed to be a GOP activist who had worked with Kenneth Starr?

Longtime readers will recall that way back when I wrote a bit about "Buckhead" the man who miraculously discovered in a few short moments that the kerning and fonts of the Dan Rather memos were "off" and put his "findings" up on Free Republic. You all know the results of his magnificent bit of internet sleuthing. In researching Buckhead, whose real name is Harry McDougal, I found out that in addition to being a member of the Federalist Society and someone who helped write anti-Clinton briefs for Kenneth Starr, he was a member of the Fulton County elections board which ruled that the extremely dubious Sonny Perdue and Saxby Chambliss wins in 2002 were perfectly a-ok. The guy got around.

5. I think you might be referring to...
Kristinn Taylor, though I'm not sure he has red hair and a beard. He's the Beltway's heavyweight Freeper thug. "Doug from Upland" also has a beard; he's the Freeper who reacted so angrily when Free Republic was accused of helping a contractor get murdered in Iraq. Best simply to call him by his screen name, "beardedsphincter".

"I feel sad having to expose Barack Obama," Martin wrote in an accompanying press release, "but the man is a complete fraud. The truth is going to surprise, and disappoint, and outrage many people who were drawn to him. He has lied to the American people, and he has sought to misrepresent his own heritage."

It could only be a coincidence that I've read very similar statements on DU. Yeah. It must be just a coincidence. :eyes:

I just went through all the links I could find to put me in contact with anyone of the folks at the Post or at the Institute so I could give them a comment or two ~ maybe about Miss Allen's sex life with other people's pets, or maybe something else, but certainly an idea or two about where they could put their mangled syntax and their LIES and DISTORTIONS.

27. No kidding. I'm reminded of RW radio host Neal Horsley's interview with Alan Colmes.
In mid May, the rare liberal on Fox radio, talk show host Alan Colmes, interviewed Neal Horsley, an anti-abortion militant. As a boy growing up in rural Georgia, Horsley said he routinely enjoyed intimate relations with animals.

Colmes: You had sex with animals?

Horsley: Absolutely. I was a fool. When you grow up on a farm in Georgia, your first girlfriend is a mule.

Colmes: Are you suggesting that everybody who grows up on a farm in Georgia has a mule as a girlfriend?

Horsley: It has historically been the case. You people are so far removed from the reality. . . . Welcome to domestic life on the farm. You experiment with anything that moves when you are growing up sexually. You're naive. You know better than that... If it's warm and it's damp and it vibrates, you might in fact have sex with it.

Ridgeway called Horsley and read him the quotes. "That's correct," Horsley replied. Ridgeway reprinted words from Horsley's website. "Now when homosexuals, or adulterers, or fornicators, or pedophiles, or beast fornicators and beast suckers, or any sexual outlaws, parade themselves around as if they could be followers of Jesus Christ, they demonstrate a lie and blasphemy and abomination."

34. Kristinn Taylor to the rescue
About the Washington Post Hit Piece on Free Republic Today
Saturday, June 28, 2008 | Kristinn

The effort by The Post to protect Obama from rumors is in stark contrast to how they promoted potentially candidacy-damaging rumors eight-years ago.

When George W. Bush ran for president in 1999, The Washington Post led the way in rumor-mongering about whether he used cocaine in his youth. Bush refused to deny cocaine use saying that denying rumors just leads to having to deny more and more rumors. No one ever came forward with allegatons that they had first-hand knowledge of Bush using cocaine, but that didn't stop The Post and the mainstream media as painting Bush as a cokehead.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2037834/posts

Kristinn has been a FReeper since July, 1998. He must have conveniently forgotten this post by rimjob in 1999:

To: Freedom Wins

So, it doesn't matter if he snorted coke as a youth? It was a long time ago, a youthful indiscretion? Kinda like people who frequented sneakeasies during prohibition? Kind of a cute story, eh? Well, how about all the people whose lives have been destroyed by being arrested for the felony of drug possession? What about the millions of people who are rotting away in your filthy drug infested prisons at this very moment?

Well, by God, if you people insist on electing another cokehead as President, you damned well better throw open all the prison cell doors and free every man, woman, and child you're holding on drug charges. And if you're gonna elect another drug felon as President, you'd better rescind each and every one of your unconstitutional drug laws now on the books, including all of your unconstitutional search and seizure laws, and your asset forfeiture laws, and your laws that enable your unconstitutional snooping into our bank accounts and cash transactions. Well, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. You people are sick! Conservatives my ass. You people are nothing but a bunch of non-thinking hypocrits! You're a shame and a disgrace to the Republic!

And, I, for one, am tired of taking orders from cokeheads and felons! Elect another one and I'll tell you what. I'll be ready for war! It'll be time to take up arms and run the filthy lying bastards out!

104. Actually, Obama et al CAN sue to stop fraudulent, dishonest attacks
It would not surprise me if Obama's going to unleash the Litigator Pit Bulls of War on at least a few of them -- perhaps some of the FReaks, but more likely the authors and publishers of Neoswiftboat books. At the very least, it could tie up the release of said book(s) until well after the election.

If Kerry had shown a tenth of the brass Obama has and gone after the Smear Boat Liars in court, he'd be running for a second term, Mario Cuomo and Lawrence Tribe would be on the Supreme Court (and possible John Edwards following the impeachment and conviction of Clarence Thomas for lying to Congress and dereliction of office).

I was sent this to me by a good friend today. She said it was going around her office and the office says it is supposed to be a picture of the real original Barack Obama Birth Certificate not the copies you see floating around the internet.

I want to believe it's real but I dunno if I trust anything I see on the internet. I did a google search and this image did not show up anywhere.

Are there any experts out there that can confirm or deny?

67. On the topic of evolution
you might be surprised how much division there is on FR (I was, at least). When an evolution/creation thread pops up, there are the usual fundy whackos, but there seem to be a nearly equal number of people who really do understand that creationism is bunk, and aren't shy about saying so. They're still pretty screwed up about almost everything else, but at least there's some tiny glimmer of intelligence.

Edited on Sat Jun-28-08 07:26 PM by Posteritatis
I poke at the place now and then to see what they're thinking, and whenever evolution comes up they get a decent flamewar going on. (I looked at one on random and there's a hilarious argument over whether "scientism" is a religion.)

Ed: comment on said thread: "I would not start a science thread on FR. It would be like taking your eight year old daughter to a brothel." Ouch!

but rimjob came out very pro-creationist one day and chased all the evolution folks off...Some still post there, but their numbers have dwindled since Robinson decided that any real science was verboten. Particularly silly stuff; when the topic comes up they start arguing over whether threads should be tagged under science or religion. The creationists insist it's religion, etc.

Of course, in the same thread I saw some guy claiming that change wasn't change. The place is impressively Dadaist at times.

106. the posters I like are people like
Coyoteman, PatrickHenry, Ichneumon, furball4paws, Right Wing Professor, Senator Bedfellow, AlterKaker, Oztrich Boy, js1138...I can't stand their politics but the information about evolution they have posted has been very insightful.

Others, like DaveLoneRanger, LiteKeeper, jwalsh07, Matchett-PI, GodGunsGuts, Elsie, Fester Chugabrew, and Running Wolf are so incredibly ignorant that it can be a treat to read their stuff...These are the types of people we need to show to the world...anti-science at every turn. They display no logic and are consistently caught lying for God. The science guys over there fear these people because they rightly believe that society will eventually see what a bunch of Luddites they all are and start equating that with the Republican Party.

Among the first group, many don't post there anymore since rimjob posted this:

What part of "I have no problem with science" did you not understand? I do, however, have a great problem with the Godless Marxist ACLU influenced big government forcing evolution theory, homosexuality, feminism, whacko environmentalism, earth worship, paganism, even Islamic fascism on our children in public schools while simultaneously trying to remove all mention of God and Christianity from their daily lives. And that is not a theory. That is real life government intrusion, subversion, suppression and denial of freedom and constitutional rights. I think it's a shame that some people on FR are so willing to join forces with the liberals and Marxist ACLU in their efforts to destroy our traditional American way of life.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1725737/posts?page=194#194

Before Rimjob came out firmly for creationists, the evolution side over there used to beat up the creationists pretty regularly. It doesn't happen near as often anymore.

Here is another Rimjob gem:

I doubt that. The socialist/leftist/liberal attacks on our rights to freedom of religion and limited government intrusion, ie, the government forcing the theory of evolution and other socialist dogma on our school children (man springing from apes rather than the biblical account of creation; atheism; homosexualism; feminism; whacko environmentalism, etc) may be controversial, but not science itself.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1725737/posts?page=91#91

Evolution is socialist dogma!?!? Idiot.

Sifting through hundreds of postings, she began to piece together their identities. There was "Beckwith," whom she pegged as a veteran from Boston, old enough to vote for John F. Kennedy, in uniform by 1964, and host of a Web site that devotes considerable space to an "Obama file" that says the senator is "by birth, blood and training, a Muslim."

Allen found Beckwith discussing the matter in a Jan. 13 clip from a Web-based conservative radio show based in San Diego. In his thick Boston brogue, Beckwith told hosts Jeff Lynch and Mike Howard that Obama's "relationship to Islam is the big question. When one investigates the background of Obama's conversion, I can find no record of his baptism."

"Beckwith" posted his weak reply late yesterday...

The first thing I have to say about "An Attack That Came Out of the Ether," published by The Washington Post on June 28th, is that at NO time was I ever contacted by this woman, Danielle Allen. I spoke to two male Post reporters, who spoke to me over the phone for a period of months. The first contact was inthe fall of 2007. They told me they were trying to track down thesource of emails they considered negative to the Obamamessiah.<br><br>Allen, who is an Obama http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shill">shill from Chicago and who has contributed$2,750 to Obama (going back to 2004), obsesses about the "Muslim" Obama stories, but steers clear of Obama's relationships with communists, Marxists, socialists, terrorists, racist reverends and convicted swindlers. The trick she attempts to use is to knock down one or two or three items so the other four thousand don't count.

Read the rest of his drivel http://www.theobamafile.com/ObamaLatest.htm">here -- and see how he in fact fails to address the fundamental untruth of his web site's content with every evasion, deflection and dissembling talking point imaginable.

Poor "Beckwith." Is someone feeling the heat?

105. Beckwith's Tourette's: What happens when he's confronted via e-mail by a REPUBLICAN in Georgia?
I gave a heads-up to an enlightened GOPer of my acquaintance who is voting for Obama ("... I like where he's coming from... he has a realistic chance of restoring Constitutional balance and fiscal discipline while dealing with the energy and economy. McCain and the reigning GOP coterie would just fuck the country up even more severely.") about teh article this morning. He decided to drop "Peckerwith"... er, "Beckwith" a note.

Irrelevant: Ms. Allen and Mr. Mosk never made any such claim; Ms. Allen is working with a team of researchers who divide a large workload (including interviews). Your assertion does nothing to deflect from the article's accuracy -- in fact, your overwheening whining is almost as bad as your refusal to remove content from your site that has been repeatedly shown to be false or incomplete in such a way as to depict a derogatory or negative image or stereotype of Senator Obama.

And that was a major flaw in just the first sentence of your whiny outburst! The rest of it is just as specious and weakly defensive; I will neither waste your time or mine by Fisking the rest of it, although it would be an amusing exercise in debunking someone unable to muster a robust defense of their words, actions, or dishonest web site.

It is not Senator Obama or the Washington Post but YOU who are the problem. In fact, some of your site's content is quite arguably actionable. Senator Obama, who has a spine when it comes to bare-knuckle politics (unlike Al Gore Jr. and John Kerry) has used the old Chicago metaphor to make it clear that "if they ((read: you)) bring a knife to the fight, we'll bring a gun." The WP story should have been a big warning shot across the bow to you ad your fellow disinformation agents. Here's a hint: instead of sabotaging your own image by posting a childish, defensive, unintentionally hilarious and ultimately unhelpful blog entry to your web site, I'd bet you a buck that you should have been retaining the services of a skilled litigator. Judging from word going around the beltway and campaign circles these days, my money is on the likelihood you will need one.

PS: Hire a better web designer! Your site's layout and typefaces are on the amateurish side.
