Bush Cites Enviro Concerns to Curb Solar Development…While Accelerating Oil Drilling

David Sirota at Open Left:

A few weeks back, I wrote a New York Times magazine article about the populist uprising against unbridled oil and gas drilling in the Mountain West. The article highlighted a major theme in my new book, THE UPRISING. In the article, I discussed how the Bush Bureau of Land Management has thrown the principle of environmental caution overboard by opening up a huge amount of federal land to drilling. So it is with more than a little bit absurd to read this New York Times story today:

“Faced with a surge in the number of proposed solar power plants, the federal government has placed a moratorium on new solar projects on public land until it studies their environmental impact, which is expected to take about two years. The Bureau of Land Management says an extensive environmental study is needed to determine how large solar plants might affect millions of acres it oversees in six Western states.”

Do you love it? We’re facing gas prices that necessitate drilling in environmentally sensitive and heretofore protected land right now, despite absolutely no evidence that it would ease current prices. Yet the Bush administration sees no dichotomy in insisting that we need to take a slow, measured approach to building solar plants, lest we don’t take into account the long term environmental impact.

7. The Oil Corps love Busholini. He is a real Hero.
The US Troops, their family & friends love him too. He is for Freedom & they happily lay down their lives for a True American Freedom Fighter and the Oil Corps.Oil is the life blood of America, so Blood for Oil is a fair exchange.

10. I wouldn't assume the majority of US troops love Bush.
Or that their families do. A majority of nobody but millionaires loves Bush.

8. It's the end of the world as we know it,
and I don't feel fine about it; not with idiots engineers driving the stupid train to ignoranceville. If it weren't sooooooo stupid, it might be ironic, it might be farcical, but this is real life, and we have Homer Simpson crossed with Darth Vader running the show.

I weep.

11. They are also confident. Confident if anything gets in their way
they pull out a move from a Nazi playbook, which has been updated year by year. I'm afraid Democracy is really dead. We do live in fascism, and have for decades, it just took * in the WH to put the cherry on top. Oh, that's just my opinion...wink/nod

12. Totally, fucking irony impaired, these people!
Actually, though, they are just protecting their precious OIL buddies. Disgusting pieces of trash, the lot of them - I swear if they want to look at environmental impact, they should study themselves!

15. Manipulation of Public Opinion
This is all part of a concerted effort to promote oil interests and discredit the environmental movement. The run-up in gas prices is only partially attributable to market forces and the strength or weakness of the US dollar. Prices have been allowed to sky-rocket to soften opposition to drilling in ANWAR and off the coast. Combine this with the recent US Supreme Court ruling on the Exxon Valdez punitive damage verdict that will limit the extent to which an oil company will be held financially responsible for environmental damage resulting from their profit making activities. Top it off with the representation that solar power projects on federal lands are being held up due to pressure from "environmental groups". (Please tell me the last time the bush* administration was responsive to environmental concerns) This is all part of a concerted public relations effort to garner public support for increased oil drilling, limiting responsibility of the oil companies and discrediting any opposition to these developments as environmental extremism. Got to give these bastards credit. They are masters at manipulating the public. As a nation we are just stupid enough to keep falling for this crap.

would present environmental damage?

17. Fucking barbarian
And I don't make that comparison lightly.

Looting and pillaging via a grander and less obvious method.

It's as if a giant flint-making tribe were trying to destroy a smaller tribe that had just invented iron and bronze tools.

This era will go down in history as a setback for human technological history.
