These jackasses would sell their mothers down the river for a dime. I bet that nasty old Constitution is just a nuisance to them.

3. They probably missed the part about a "duty to uphold"

Figured it had to do with an exercise program.

But I must say, this is just data presented. It could all be a coincidence? Yeah, that's it, just
a damn coincidence. This kind of crap makes you talk to yourself;)

He should read it before it no longer applies.

10. Adam Smith's worst nightmare, epitomised in the form of the most basic data: government
Edited on Sat Jun-28-08 04:31 PM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
by businessmen.

“People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.”

... people of the same trade, here comprising both businessmen and politicians, their mutual stock-in-trade being, of course, bilking the tax-paying public - who, as Chomsky pointed out, they consider an irrelevance - of their hard-earned money.

“All for ourselves, and nothing for other people, seems, in every age of the world, to have been the vile maxim of the masters of mankind.”

"That will do nicely", Mr Smith, to plagiarise the American Express lady. If only Mr Smith were able to go to Washington (or London) today. He'd be in for a rare shock.

13. Would he ever. Like Burke surveying the French Revolution
Edited on Sat Jun-28-08 05:46 PM by autorank
Except much worse. I spoke to a German diplomat some time ago and asked him what it was like
working in Washington. He said, "Well, you know, it's no different than Jakarta." I've thought
about that every now and then and it rings truer every time it comes up, like now.

Thanks once again for the education. That's simply perfect. The irony is, of course, that the
thieves claim Smith as their patron saint.

Have they reached the depth of their calumny? Not by a long shot.

29. How about this (my source), which I found on DU a while back:
Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 12:00 PM by KCabotDullesMarxIII

It took my breath away. I still find it difficult to credit that the far-right knaves have had the bare-faced gall to claim Smith as their guru. Smith as in Smith and Wesson, yes. That I could certainly wear.

"Mercantilism was often supported by powerful economic interests allied with the state and enjoying monopolies and special privileges."

In other words, "cartels", or one gigantic national one, the Establishment of the day. So, Adam Smith was agin cartels, the involvement of businessmen in government, or even in distant proximity to it, and in favour of taxation in proportion to income (Wow, even our post WWII Labour Party only charged 95%, and that, just on the top bracket of the income of the richest - though I trust they would have paid lesser proportions on their income below that).

And Smith, like Einstein, who was, himself, also a virulent anti-corporatist, clearly had a very Socialist stance on that income tax not being paid back to themselves but on the social and material infrastructure of the country.

I seriously don't think that any of these reps read much of whas put before them.

If they did, they might not understand it.

What a way to run a country!

23. I still say it is the effect of blackmail. Who is going to vote against the
guys who know that your marrried son visits gay internet porn sites or that your husband sold stock after his broker told him to after the broker's other clients started to sell (Martha Stewart's crime) or whose brother-in-law brings call girls across state lines for "dates" (Mann Act violation). Cheney has had seven years to gather blackmail material on friends and relatives and major contributors of ever Democratic Congressman in America.

How are they not going to vote for telecom immunity?

24. That's been my thinking all along
and perhaps the fat contributions are to ease their wounds, or the prize for "playing along".

If this is true, then it is the best reason to vote against this bill. Blackmail will only continue throughout the years until there is complete control.

Complete control.

I am so angry and disgusted and fearful and heartbroken.

I don't know how or even if we can survive this point of no return.

28. Free market, supply and demand
When goods are up for bid, price is determined by what bidders are willing to pay.

If that's what they're going for, then that's what our rights are worth these days.

Since our rights are on the auction block maybe we just need to figure out a way to get in on the bidding so we can pay to keep them.

30. I agree but, remember, they work on volume
There are several opportunities a week to score like this and they'll not miss a session at the trough.

But, you're right, they should demand more for selling out the foundation of the constitution. They
really have no historical context.
