Does anybody know if Bush's disgrace at Monticello on July 4 is a closed event?
If he is speaking at Monticello on July 4, is that another one of his carefully protected and staged events - or is there a chance he will actually be able to see protesters this time? Chimpy hasn't been seen before the general public since the Coretta Scott King funeral, to my recall. Only carefully staged and controlled events have seen him.

If he is speaking at Thomas Jefferson's home, it would be disgusting in the extreme if dissent is stifled. But then again, George Bush is closer to Robert Mugabe philosophically than he is to Thomas Jefferson.

Anyway, it would be nice if some Jeffersonian DUers were there to "greet" him. If that is possible.

2. Per this, open to the public...
George W. Bush to Speak at Monticello on July 4
Submitted by davidswanson on Fri, 2008-06-27 20:54.

By David Swanson

The Unitary Executive is scheduled to disgrace the grounds of Thomas Jefferson's house, Monticello, in Charlottesville, Va., making a speech on the morning of July 4, 2008. The event is open to the public, and is Monticello's annual Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony. Numerous immigrants will become citizens in an event besmirched by the presence of a war criminal, and held in the district of Congressman Virgil Goode, whose entire reelection campaign platform consists of hatred for immigrants.

If you support the complaints against the first King George III enumerated on the first Fourth of July in the Declaration of Independence, I encourage you to attend the event. Go early. Wear an impeachment shirt. And bring a copy of our poor abused Constitution. This is not a time for fear and timidity. How dare this fascist blood-soaked murderer set foot in Charlottesville or on the grounds of Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson?

4. Thanks! Didn't see it. I'm thinking about going, although it's a long drive.
Can't believe he's actually speaking in public. Thinking about going. What a wonderful way to spend the Fourth of July, protesting against the worst and most anti-democratic (small d this time) president in U.S. history.

He is a disgrace, and has no place at Monticello.

8. My son-in-law is a Jefferson family descendant.
And an alumnus of the University of Virginia School of Law.
And he's a liberal Democrat.
He's pissed about this.
He is also a member of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the non-profit corporation which owns and operates Monticello.
And he's writing a letter to the chairman as we speak/type.

9. Good for him! Please tell him thanks for me.
Thanks from many others here, I'm sure, as well.

As a lawyer myself, I appreciate his efforts. To allow Bush to sully Monticello for a photo op is disgusting.

17. We should all have the address of the organization to let them know
how we feel. Email would be better. Faster we only have a few days.

10. There is only one road to the top of the mountain.
So if he drives in, he will undoubtedly see protesters. He may take Marine 1 as it is fairly close to D.C. but I don't know where they would land it at Monticello, landing on a mountain for chopper is extremely difficult.

But even the "flat" areas up there are sloping and there are a lot of trees. The only place is that little lawn in the back of the house, where I would assume they would be having the ceremony.
