Wow check out this letter to our Blue Dog Dem congress critter!!
Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 10:07 AM by proud2Blib
No, I didn't write it; it was forwarded to me. But I couldn't agree more!!

6/23/2008

Congressman Dennis Moore
United States House of Representatives
Washington, DC

Via FAX 1 202 225-2807

Dear Mr. Moore

A review of your congressional votes as our representative for the third district of Kansas would be very illuminating to your constituients, for your votes on many issues reveal your numerous betrayals of both the voters and of our most cherished American principles.

On 10/2/02 you voted to authorize the use of military force in Iraq. Obviously, you did this either in the absence of your required due diligence (did you go read the classified NIE or was it all just too much bother?) or out of completely nefarious motivations. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, it was merely slouth, laziness, and neglect.

On 5/14/05 you were one of the deciding votes on the Bankruptcy Bill. Here you were obviously influenced by the lobbyists and the campaign financing you accrue from the banking and credit industry. Clearly, you have used your committee position to tap those funds and you have turned your loyalty from your constituients to your patrons.

On 9/27/06 you voted in favor of the Military Commissions Act stripping habeus corpus from our civil protections in order to allow the administration additional tools to keep their nefarious and illegal torture programs secret. Even our right-wing Supreme Court would not go along with this affront to our constitution. But you did!

You opposed all measures aimed at enforcing timelines for withdrawal from Iraq including opposition to the McGovern Amemdment to the Iraq Supplemental which you voted against on 4/8 and 5/10/07, and your support for the Bi-Partisan Compact on Iraq opposing any funding cuts on 9/26/07. Then, in the face of the most unpopular war and unpopular president in modern times, you voted last week to continue what is virtually blank check funding for another year of Mr. Bush's occupation.

And then there is the Orwellian-named Protect America Act, a measure designed to rescind the 4th Amendment and a blatant act of Congressional obstruction of justice. You supported this abomination by cosigning the Protect America Act letter in 2/08, by voting against the Democratic alternative on 3/14/08, and finally by voting in favor of the House capitulation last week. Once again you voted for a legal regime where the president's illegal and unconstitutional acts remain secret. You, and 104 other self-called Democrats have colluded with this most corrupt administration in American History.

You are a living lie, Mr Moore. Your Blue-Dog economic conservatism got us into a $3 Trillion war, and extended the peoples debt to $10 Trillion, while destroying the American economy for the middle and underclasses with your pro wealth, pro corporate policies. And as a member of the Banking and Finance Committee, you are particularly culpable for our current economic disaster. All in all, Mr. Moore, your tenure in the House of Representatives is remarkable neither for its firm stand on principles, nor for its leadership on important issues. Rather, you are a fictile back-bencher who goes along to get along. You are a poster boy for term limits, for you have certainly outlived your usefulness as a voice for the people. Time for you to get out and start your lobbying career. We are all lefties in my family. This November, we're voting Obama, Slattery, Jordan, because we believe it's better to have our Republican representatives properly labeled.

Sincerely,

1. Whoever wrote it
likes the word "nefarious".

Nefarious is a good description.

2. Here's hoping two things
First, terrific letter, and more congress critters need to have their dubious records exposed as much as possible, particularly for their constituents who have been gulled into thinking their guy is all right.

But back to hoping two things:

If Mr. Moore is really such a malleable little tool for the prevailing political winds, let's hope he's re-elected (we need every warm body on the D side of the House we can get) and that he has the smarts to see that our country is headed toward complete rejection of everything he's voted for in the last six or eight years, and changes his vote accordingly.

And knowing that he's getting attention like that detailed in the letter might just move him off his lazy backside.

4. I agree the cited items deserve condemnation, on the other hand we Dems would not control the House
and Senate without Blue Dog Dems winning elections.

Be careful of throwing the baby out with the bath water.

9. I couldn't agree more. On the other hand,
since you live in the Kansas City area, as do I, you know that he represents Johnson County, which has an overwhelming republican constituency. He could never have gotten elected or re-elected, unless he he co-opted their republican values. Personally he is a disgrace, and is no more of a dem than Lieberman was.

10. I really disagree
I got involved with the Johnson County Dems a couple years ago and have learned a lot about our district. Jo Co tripled our Dem representation in Topeka in 2006. We elected some pretty progressive Democrats in Johnson County. I am also knocking on doors as I did in 2006 and I can't even count the number of converted Democrats I have talked to. Just got back from placing 50 yard signs and talked to lots of people. I was wearing an Obama shirt and got several requests for shirts like mine and Obama yard signs. In Republican Johnson County.

We have a lot of Democrats here who (like me at one time) are registered Republicans so they can vote in the primaries. We are working at converting them to the party they SHOULD belong to, so we can get them to vote in OUR primary. And for the first time in decades, we actually have Democrats running against each other in the primary. There are also literally hundreds of Republicans here who are switching to the Democratic party because they are sick to death of the right wing grip on Kansas.

Remember a moderate Republican is not much different from a conservative Democrat.

Our Johnson County Dem group is growing by leaps and bounds. You need to get to the meetings early to get a seat. In Johnson County, 37,000 Democrats voted in the Feb caucuses and only 17,000 republicans showed up. That's a two to one margin.

So yes, Dennis Moore could indeed get elected if he voted more like a Democrat. The sad thing is he is losing the left and we are a big part of the active Democrats here in Johnson County. I talked to several Democrats today who said they did not want a Dennis Moore yard sign. One guy came out of his house and started yelling at me to take that damn sign away and then he saw it was for our state rep candidate and he said "Oh, okay, I like HIM. I thought you were bringing me a Dennis Moore sign."

Dennis is losing his Democratic base. I am hoping the rumors I am hearing are true and he is retiring after this next term so we can find a real Democrat to represent this district.

6. Does the author realize that Slattery was a telecom lobbyist?
If they don't someone needs to tell them that Slattery was lobbying for telecoms at the time they were asking for immunity. He also lobbied on behalf of clients for Homeland Security contracts/legislation. Slattery's hands are not clean. From the letter it isn't clear whether they are talking about (poppa) Jim Slattery's run for Senate or (son) Mike Slattery's run for the Kansas House.

Other than the confusion about "which Slattery" the author is talking about it's a great letter.

8. Oh I am sure he is talking about Jim
Mikey is running in my district and this guy who wrote the letter doesn't live near me.

Jim is running a slick campaign. He has an excellent chance to beat 911 Pat and Pat is SO bad I can support Jim, in spite of his hands. Pat's are far far dirtier.

Jim came to our DFA picnic and not only wowed the crowd but walked away with money. And you know how progressive our DFA group is. Jim is slick. I gotta give him some credit.

I like Lee Jones a lot. I will probably vote for him in the primary. But Jim has more money and probably has a better chance of beating Pat.

11. Thanks for the info. That's good to hear. I know allegiances had changed,
there but I hadn't realized that Johnson County had changed THAT much. It was the bastion of Republicanism since the early sixties. In fact it is where I still see a preponderance of "W" stickers on cars. There and now Lees Summit, I'm sorry to say. But this is good news. Thanks.
