That's how it worked in Watergate, as the Judiciary Committee did its work over the months.

Courage.

4. Okay. Tell me which 17 Republicans we're going to flip by December.
Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 04:57 PM by Occam Bandage
Keep in mind that we cannot even get more than a handful to flip to try to override the all-time record number of filibusters they have launched over good, strong legislation that would have provided necessary relief to Americans. If we can't get them to flip to set a timetable for Iraq, why would they flip to convict because of Iraq? If we can't get them to flip to restore Habeas Corpus, what makes you think they'd flip to convict over violations of Habeas Corpus? If we can't even keep our own party from flipping over FISA, where do you get the idea that they're going to flip to convict over FISA?

6. I Couldn't Have Told You That Before The Judiciary Comitee Started Work In 1973 Either
Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 05:02 PM by MannyGoldstein
The Republicans knew then, as they know now, that they had a Republican President that was a horrible liability to their (re)election chances, so once a few flipped, a whole bunch flipped, and Goldwater went to the White House to toss Tricky Dick's ass out the door. If I recall correctly, the entire process from investigation starting to Republicans caving was 3 months.

People have to do their job. We have an out-of-control monster who's setting all sorts of incredible precedents by ignoring the law. And he has access to nuclear weapons.

8. Bush is already a liability, and our Judiciary Committee is doing the same type of investigations.

Turns out these guys are a lot better at controlling leaks, stonewalling, and hiding/destroying/'forgetting' evidence than the Nixon ones were. Moreover, this party is far, far more unified than Nixon's was. They hold a tight line on everything, and damn what opinion polling shows. They believe that you don't win by capitulating, ever.

9. But The Democrats In 1973 Were Going After Nixon En Masse
None of the craven "impeachment is off the table" crap that we have today. The Democratic enablers of Bush should all be fired in the next election. They have totally abrogated their responsibility.

10. They've calculated that conviction is not a political possibility. When faced with a failure,

it's usually best not to make an enormous show of it. Sure, they'd please DU by impeaching and acquitting, but that's just about all they'd accomplish.

12. I Believe That They're Simply Cowards
I'll invoke your namesake's postulate here: the simplest answer is probably the best. They are simply cowards.

It's not like there's no precedent for doing what needs to be done, and under very similar circumstances.

This country was founded by folks who took on the British Army, an army which had never lost a war under King George III. It was a hell of tough time, uphill all of the way, but they eventually figured out how to do the job.

5. Dick Cheney's approval rating is below 20%.
And that's just within his own family.

11. WOW. Congress must be afraid of losing the African-American vote over impeachment
I'd be like this one black guy in a psychiatric hospital who suffers from a disabling phobia of peaches: "I'll vote for the other guy! That asshole--the white guy! Whatever his name is! Anything but the peaches! NOT THE PEACHES!!!

Other than that guy, we'd be golden.

14. There is a difference between "defending"
Cheney and voting for impeachment. Republicans would not vote for impeachment and I am sure that more than a handful of Democrats would not vote for impeachment either. The numbers aren't there. Pelosi and Reid KNOW the numbers aren't there. Of the record and in private Pelosi has learned who will not go for it. That is why it has never been brought up. It would be a disaster.

15. Why should they?
They already have happy, comfy lives. Plus, we voted them into power, so they feel they can do whatever the hell they want now... knowing that we are so goddamn fucking stupid to have fallen for their lies over and over and over and....

... and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over................. ad infinitum
