A little perspective on Bush's agreement with North Korea. |
|
When Bush accused Obama of being an appeaser for suggesting we negotiate before bombing, it was all over the news. Some of the wonks even suggested that Bush was off base.
It seems to me that the progress with North Korea is not receiving nearly as much scrutiny. I'm all for the diplomatic route, and this was the first sign of progress in seven years. But I'm struggling with this. First, we've removed North Korea from our Bad Guys list before they've fulfilled their end of the bargain. And about the cooling tower that the North Koreans blew up -- it already had been decommissioned and was worthless. So, somebody help me here: what have we gotten from this deal? What has North Korea given up?

1. And US taxpayers paid for the destruction of the tower. |
|
$2.something million to get it leveled.

2. Cheney and the neocons were furious about this |

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/2211928/Dick-Cheney--'tried-to-block-North-Korea-nuclear-deal'.htmlBecause all that North Korea did was dislose to China how much plutonium they had. The cooling tower destruction was meant to be a symbolic gesture showing NK's willingness to cooperate. This should be the beginning of diplomacy, because the deal so far accomplishes little.

3. What has N.K. given up? |
|
All pretense that it has any respect for Bush or America.

4. I'm not sure that North Korea ever gave anyone the impression that they have respect for the U.S. |
