What could be more exciting, politically, than watching Barack Obama, the man who will become the first black President of the U.S., give his acceptance speech on the 40th anniversary of MLK's "I have a Dream" speech, in front of 75-85,000 Americans who are hungry for change!?

I am going to do everything in my power to make sure that my wife, and I, and our two mixed-race kids are in the crowd!

THIS is an America where "the Dream" is realized. THIS is the America I want to live in!

5. Cut the cynical crap. This is the "dream"...

That being, the American Dream, which consists of charging gallons of gas while on the road driving in unpaid large SUVs, eating loads of unhealthy food washed down with the purest, most expensive bottled water, being bombarded with masses of radio and billboard based pro-consumerism ads...while on the way to sit in a large stadium amongst other like minded good consumers to listen to someone who will make us feel good about ourselves after the last few years of terrible decisions (both political and personal). Its like a new years resolution, but 4 times as cool and expensive. The wheels on the bus continue to go round and round.

Seems to me that someone who would see a large venue for an important political announcement as being "Hitleresque" is the one being cynical.

Obama was not my first choice -- he wasn't even 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. And anyway I'm not into mindless cheering for any candidate. And while I don't disagree much at all with your assessment of the current state of the "American dream", I simply do not see how the current state of affairs somehow makes Obama Hitleresque. Unless you want to say that any big-name politician going to a big venue to address a big crowd is simply Hitleresque on the face of it because of the times we live in. Which is an odd position IMO, but at least consistent.

I just don't get where this Hitleresque business is coming from. And why it is being directed exclusively at Obama, after the fascistic excesses of the Bush administration. Weird.

Large crowd gatherings in a mass media age provide unnecessary message redundancy. These people standing around for 8 hours could probably just turn on the tube and let Hannity tell them what was said in 5 minutes or less.

you would have to look ONLY at the venue (a stadium with a very big crowd), and ignore completely Obama's message of HOPE versus Hitler's messages of ethnic SUPERIORITY and HATE.

Look, Germany was in a massive recession and in need of hope and pride, which Hitler delivered by evoking historic images of their Prussian heritage and past greatness. Hitler did more than scapegoat the Weimar Republic, or point fingers at the League of Nations, or the Jewish people (though blame was a large element to his movement). By giving speeches in historical locations on important anniversaries, he used history to invoke sentimentalism and nostalgia in the depression ridden Germans, who were desperate and bitter about their socio-economic position following the Great War. Pride in one's country and the willingness to serve the nation (as the only means to edify oneself) are the cornerstones to fascist thought--not hate.

Cynical manipulation of national pride IS one of cornerstones to fascism (which is an ideology based on, and perpetuated by, the fear of, and hatred for, those who are "different".) However, I believe that ANY comparison of Hitler's racist, hate-and-fear-mongering, "patriotism," to Barack Obama's positive message of HOPE for a more-just America, is either intentionally malicious, or, just plain stupid.

Please explain your decision.

As stupid as those posts were, they certainly did not need to be censored. I have already reviewed the DU rules, and don't see any basis for deleting them.

I hope DU is not going to start deleting every post that makes a comparison of any person to Hitler, or any group to the Nazis.

I for example happen to think that comparsions of Bush to Hitler, and the right wing of the GOP to the Nazis, are factually supportable, and particularly apt.
