Pelosi Opposing Contempt for Rove
Pelosi Opposing Contempt for Rove
Submitted by davidswanson on Mon, 2008-07-07 21:19. Activism
By Pam Miles

I have firm confirmation that Nancy Pelosi is urging the Judiciary committee NOT to go forward with contempt against Rove.

Congressman John Conyers and the Judiciary staff are battling for it but this has become an infight among dems.

Time to burn up the phone lines.

1. OK, why the hell not?
Is it blackmail, the threat of force, or plain old lack of backbone?

144. No. It's blackmail. If she were spineless, she would let the
Judiciary Committee do what it wanted. She is being blackmailed or bribed. Those are the only plausible explanations -- unless she can give a better explanation, a persuasive one.

2. Why?
Do you think they'll actually listen?

So many high hopes for Ms. Pelosi and so many times she's let slip away chances to protect the country from Mr. Bush and Mr. Rove, et al.

At times I wonder whose side she's actually on. (No offense to anyone, either.)

81. Timing is everything
We were high on her being the first female Speaker. Even I was and I just knew she was playing politics with that "impeachment is off the table" stuff. I was wrong, as were many others. I admit it. She is a complete tool of the Bush maladministration. I'm ashamed of her as a Democrat and as a woman.

11. We know the level of moral turpitude Dick Cheney inhabits -- I can easily imagine those people
threatening her children or grandchildren if she doesn't follow WH orders. They are good at making deaths look accidental.

A threat of kidnapping and torture against my grandchildren would certainly have me doing whatever they asked of me, because I'm sure they're capable of anything.

Cheney has made quite a few public threats, although veiled, and we have strong circumstantial evidence (Katrina, 9/11, the totally corrupt DOJ indictments) they're good on them.

151. Far-fetched tin foil theory -- Maybe there is a gambler in her family.
What are the common threads linking sundry weird stories of corruption from Abramoff to Siegleman to McCain being the Republican anointed (a very odd choice in my view) -- the gambling industry. The other thread is oil, of course. But I don't think Pelosi has anything to do with the oil industry. So, tin foil hat in hand, I would guess someone owes a gambling debt or does not want a history of gambling revealed -- or or or.

Please, I'm not totally serious about this theory in that my rational side realizes that it is 98% untrue and worthless, but there is always that other 2%.

But, then again, Pelosi's conduct is so strange and so anti-Democratic and anti-Constitution and irrational that I can only explain it with crazy theories. What is with her? Has she gone mad? Now there is a possible explanation. She has gone crazy from the responsibility and horror of having to deal with Bush. That is 98% believable and 2% unbelievable.

173. More on Pelosi and her son
Paul Sr.'s San Francisco investment firm owns stock in companies like Microsoft, AT&T, Cisco Systems, Disney, and Johnson & Johnson.

His real estate investments include a four-story office building in the Financial District of San Francisco, office buildings on Battery and Sansome streets, a building housing a drugstore near Ocean Beach, and other commercial property in San Anselmo.

Other California investments include a St. Helena vineyard, a town house in Norden, and minority interests in the Auberge du Soleil resort hotel in Rutherford, the CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, and the Piatti Italian restaurant chain.

http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2007/6/4/210922.shtml

Newsmax is not my favorite news source, but nearly the same info is available from San Francisco Gate (Jan. 2007)

The bulk of the Pelosis' money comes from investments in stocks and real estate. Operating through Financial Leasing Services, his San Francisco investment firm, Paul Pelosi owns stock in companies including Microsoft, AT&T, Cisco Systems, Disney, Johnson & Johnson and a variety of tech stocks.

Real estate investments include a four-story office building at 45 Belden St. in the Financial District, office buildings on Battery and Sansome streets near the Embarcadero, a building housing a Walgreens drugstore near Ocean Beach and other commercial property in San Anselmo.

Other investments include a St. Helena vineyard worth between $5 million and $25 million, a $1 million-plus townhome in Norden (Nevada County), and minority interests in the Auberge du Soleil resort hotel in Rutherford, the CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, and the Piatti Italian restaurant chain.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/01/01/MNG83NB37E1.DTL

Here is a link to Pelosi's 2006 financial disclosure.

http://www.opensecrets.org/pfds/CIDsummary.php?CID=N00007360&year=2006

In 2006, she reported an interest of $250,001 to $500,000 in AT&T. No wonder she wants telecom immunity (although that is pretty much peanuts for her and her husband).

Sure enough, gaming stocks as well as AT&T, but then she has so many investments, it's beyond my ability to understand.

150. Politically, I'm frightened Obama is going for a Trojan Horse "Libermann" . . .
Liebermann was a "Trojan Horse" when Gore picked him ---
though Gore himself is a bit religously fanatical and would have KNOWN
who Libermann really was --- he'd served with him long enough.

I'd really NOT like to see that happen again --
but Obama's move to the right is frightening enough --
and his "religous" stuff is also getting scarey --

Yeah . . . definitely not Edwards ---

it will be someone to the right -- IMO.

I don't care if she's being blackmailed, she's now complicit in Bush's criminality. And folks, please stop making excuses or trying to theorize this away, she is actively obstructing any form of justice or accountability of this Bush Administration. She should be publicly treated as such until here last days in this country of ours.

154. This "blackmail" thing . . .
keeps popping up --- in fact Thom Hartmann yesterday and today seems to be saying he

sees it as what actually happened with everyone at one time rolling over on FISA.

Randi Rhodes hasn't gotten on the subject -- as far as I know --

HOWEVER . . . this idea of "blackmail" keeps popping up and while I have no problems

believing that these people will do ANYTHING to keep hold of power . . . I find it

someone unreasonable to think that you can blackmail such a large group without them

getting together and fighting back . . . ???

How can that be???

35. Her silence and her failure to publicly support Conyers are themselves deplorable
Even if she's not actually opposing contempt charges, a failure to act in support of it is a de facto acquiesence to Rove's flouting of the law. In her position of leadership, her silence speaks volumes about her views on the matter.

I want a strong opposition party in this country, not beltway maneuverers.

Good grief.
DU ain't what it used to be.

I clearly stated that it came from an email from a listserv I'm on and that I could find no verification as yet.
But some on the listserv work on capitol hill and the sender's info has always been accurate and reliable.

It included all the contact info for Pelosi and the Dems on the House Judiciary Committee.
Gone forever now in the locked threads graveyard.

I guess you have to document and provide links to every post here now.

48. Hi. I'll tell ya everything I know re Pam Miles.
Which ain't much.

Several months ago I got involved in the "Free Don Siegelman" movement.
I live in Alabama and in the county that 'gave' current governor Bob Riley the election in the dark of night after the polls had closed.
That's a whole 'nuther story.

You probably know about it, but google it if you don't.
Through that I was put in contact with Pam and her listserv.

The listserv has taken on a life of it's own, but still revolves around the Siegelman case AND Karl Rove's connection with it.

So we get a lot of Karl Rove stuff.
As you probably know, he's refused the House Judiciary Committee's order to appear and testify under oath.

The OP is something that came in one of her emails.
And, like you, I hope we can get to the facts.
Did she, or didn't she urge the HJC to drop their pursuit of Rove?

Dear Ms. Speaker,

We demand to know what your agenda is regarding investigatons in the Bush White House and it's staff. One by one, we've watched as this regime has daringly thumbed it's collective noses at Congress. Why the HELL is that and why aren't YOU doing your supposed "checks & balance" duties?
We're supposed to be an open goverment unless it's a situation of extreme national security. We (remember - the PEOPLE) should get real and truthful explanations to your FAILINGS as leader of the congress, as to why you go out of your way to protect and enable the skullduggery that passes for an executive branch.
Your history-making tenure of being the first gal speaker is going to end up being but a footnote to your legacy as a weak and cowering voice for the people. It's disgusting to have to conclude that that prospect doesn't seem to phase you one bit.

and then resign right before he leaves in late November, early December, and let Cheney pardon him... Preemptive pardons are what we have to thank for the Nixon "resolution" back in the Watergate days... I fear not doing anything this time around will leave a far worse precedent!

If we impeach him, we take away his pardoning power... That is why it is so essential!

86. They may be worse than we think.
What if they really did dive out of the way of 9/11, try to murder Members of Congress with anthrax and steal a couple of elections?

That would make them arch-criminals. Nuclear-armed arch-criminals.

If that's the case, you close off their avenues of movement without overly antagonizing them, and try hard to get them to back away from the nuclear weapons when the time comes to leave.

By the way, I do believe they did all that shit, and I still have even money on the next President being George W. Bush. I really want Congress to express our outrage and to try to repair some of the damage done to our system of government, but in the back of my mind, I can't help wondering if Pelosi knows what I can only suspect.

But she's more likely bought and paid for.

58. CONYERS COMPROMISED- WIFE IN DETROIT COUNCIL- LOTS OF HEAT
CONYERS HAS BEEN NEUTERED/COMPROMISED- READ THIS Latest

Op-Ed: Sludge and Detroit's political muck

BY GEORGE WEEKS
Syndicated Columnist

"The whole thing is not good for Michigan."

-- Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Detroit's scandals and other woes

"Bribe probe ensnares Conyers," the Detroit News headlined Saturday atop page one. "Feds: Surveillance evidence suggests councilwoman took money tied to waste pact." Steve Fishman, a prominent Detroit defense attorney representing Conyers, told the paper: "Every time I hear the word 'allegedly,' it reminds me of Gladys Knight and her song, 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine': 'Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.' " The Capitol Hill ties add to the national focus on Detroit's City Hall.I'm firmly convinced that there are elements in the U.S. Attorney's Office who would love to make a case against anyone whose last name is Conyers, if for no other reason than to embarrass the chairman of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee," Riddle said. He added: "Councilwoman Conyers can do that on her own without the assistance of the FBI. She's demonstrated that time and time again."

Conyers is married to U.S. Rep. John Conyers, a Detroit Democrat. She recently made national news after calling City Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. "Shrek" during a televised council session.

CONYERS TARGETED Ex-aide: FBI tapped phone, checked bank records
BY M.L. ELRICK AND JIM SCHAEFER • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITERS • JULY 1, 2008
An adviser to Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers said FBI agents asked him in early June to cooperate with their investigation into possible City Hall corruption.

The Free Press first reported Friday on freep.com that the federal probe focuses on a deal the City Council approved in November by a 5-4 margin to hire Houston-based Synagro Technologies to process Detroit's wastewater treatment sludge.

She's an idiot. I'd love to see Cindy Sheehan take that House seat from her - frankly I wouldn't shed too many tears even if she lost to a Republican challenger, if that's what it takes to get her sorry excuse for leadership out of the House and the Democratic Party.

112. Got to be holding something big on her . . .
is the only possible answer to demonstrate this type of behavior. We all know Bush initiated illegal wiretapping way back in 2001. He's had a lot of time to pick up all kinds of dirt on many political people and or their families, businesses etc. May be tinfoil hat thinking, but it certainly does have potential.

AT&T Whistleblower Urges Against Immunity for Telecoms in Bush Spy Program
The Senate is expected to vote on a controversial measure to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act tomorrow. The legislation would rewrite the nation’s surveillance laws and authorize the National Security Agency’s secret program of warrantless wiretapping. We speak with Mark Klein, a technician with AT&T for over twenty-two years. In 2006 Klein leaked internal AT&T documents that revealed the company had set up a secret room in its San Francisco office to give the National Security Agency access to its fiber optic internet cables.

137. An alternative explanation that still speaks poorly of poor Nancy
During the primaries it came out that Hillary made recommendations regarding Nixon that were designed to (I think the term was) 'keep him swinging in the wind' until the election. It was a strategy that placed political expediency over the concept that the rule of law is our guiding principle as a nation.

While I don't discount out of hand the possibility of some combination of selling out, blackmail or spinelessness, they could just be playing politics.

Whatever it is, it stinks to high heaven.

139. nancy always seems to think there is "more important" business
to focus on. More important than war criminals, constitutional and intelligence saboteurs, or any other focus on the disgrace that is this cabinet and administration.

Well Nance, so what exactly is left? Ever heard of multi-tasking? Ever heard of refusal to condemn being the same thing as condoning?

Because Nancy Pelosi, when you refuse to offer a condemnation in name or in deed, you condone George Bush. You condone this war. You condone that administrations methods and madnesses.

Shame on you for pretending to be one of us.

Maybe her constituents will hear the sound of all that money disappearing from their economy and get the message.

They should be demanding her resignation. She no longer serves them any more than she serves the American people. And if they think they are more important than the rest of us, well, then we should show them what we think about it.

She is as much of a threat to what little remains of our democracy as Bush is. She is the Empress. Serving her Emperor.

What a HORRID, HORRID POX on society these spineless leaders have left in their wake. They have absolutely NO CONCEPTION on the role that they play on the mores of a society when they choose to do wrong.

My only hope - and trust - is that today's leaders :eyes: - have "jumped the shark" (reference: Fonzi)......and everybody's gonna "move on from there" (but we trust in the Constitution of the United States of America ~ THAT'S a "keeper". Traitors ... there's only one way to deal with traitors)
