141. No-Confidence would be a start; periodic ostracism even better
Please check out my dailykos diary entry, Time to start formally ostracizing Democrats and Republicans. A sufficient number of ostracisms would all but guarantee that loser Congress persons, both Democrat and Republican, would stand no chance of getting re-elected. That's part of the goal, anyway. Of course, citizens would have to make sure that their replacements are actually better people. But if you can almost guarantee that an incumbent, such as Pelosi, will get the axe, then automatically better people will be encouraged to think about running for office. While the ostracisms, as I envision them, occur on a regular schedule, it's probably a good idea to add occasional no-confidence votes to the mix.

The ostracism penalty in Athens was banishment for 10 years. While I wouldn't mind banishing a good deal of our Congress critters for 10 or 20 years, that is hardly necessary. The way to accomplish a modern ostracism is to have postcards sent out to the constituents of Congress persons, informing them of their Congress persons' 'victory' in the ostracism voting, pointing them to an accompanying web site where the defects of the Congress person are discussed in a dedicated forum, and asking them to please, please consider voting for somebody else next time an election for that Congress person's office comes up. The title of the ostracism postcard would read something like this:

In 2008, Q2, Representative STENNY HOYER of Maryland has been OSTRACIZED by the registered Democrats of the United States of America

Ostracism votes would be conducted online, 4 times a year. That would provide frequent feedback (read: pressure from the public), as well as some opportunity for corrective behavior during the remaining part of their terms. Hopefully, any office holder who receives multiple ostracisms can count on NOT winning re-election. The voters in the ostracism process would not just be constituents, but voters throughout the country. (This is required, actually, since if you confined the voting to constituents, they would be forced - in the case of their Senators - to ostracize one of them, even if both were fine.) Preferably, only registered Democrats could vote, and they could only vote to ostracize members of the Democratic Party. (A similar process should be created for Republicans - they are also abusing their constituents....) Recipients of the postcards, on the other hand, would be any constituent household. The net result should be ostracism of, say, the worst 5% of Democrats, and the worst 5% of Republicans, every 4 months. So, when registered Democrats get to ostracize 5% of Democratic Congress people, if there's 50 such Senators and 218 Representatives, then the net result is that 3 Democratic Senators and 14 Democratic Representatives get ostracized. The voting could be held over a 2 week period, and ostracism voters could add comments. (These would hopefully be read by the staffs of the ostracized Congress critters.) If it's not possible to obtain rock solid lists of registered Democrats and Republicans, an alternative process might be to make all voting identities public, complete with address information, and a required online legal agreement that the individual doing the voting is who he or she says they are, and that they are indeed registered to the required party (Democrat or Republican), subject to legal penalties for fraud. (A wrinkle on this idea is to also send reminder postcards to constituents a week before election day, if any of their representatives has received even one ostracism during the previous 2 years, and furthermore is up for re-election.)

She is a Beltway insider par excellence and a longtime, polished professional pol who knows exactly what she is doing and what she has not done. Unfortunately I don't think she has enough of a conscience to be significantly bothered by it all. Her term as Speaker has been an unmitigated disaster, set an horrible example for future generations and has been a tragedy for the Republic. History will not be kind to Pelosi.

5. She's been a huge disappointment. No leadership at all.
She could have had investigations that would lay open the horrors of the Bush administration, without the filibuster problem of the senate. She could have served the country well and made a place for herself in history. Well, she's made her place now. She's been the most ineffective Democratic Speaker in modern history.

She has been a total disappointment to all. The absolute worse outcome is that she was given the once in a lifetime opportunity to be the first women to become Speaker of the House and she totally blew it. Her inability and behavior will be referred to whenever any other women makes the attempt proceed up the ladder in the field of politics. She's done a lot of damage that will be most difficult to reverse.

info from their illegal snooping to keep the repukes and many Dems in line.

Also, those Anthrax mailgrams that were sent out to Daschle, and several other prominent Dems, as well as to the broadcast news-anchors of the 3 major tv networks must have served the purpose of quieting any real opposition to their plans for war.

One last thing: Around the same time that the Dem leadership of congress got their nthrax mailgrams, Bill Clinton received a mysterious package at his office in New York City that his staffers considered a Hazmat risk and the authorities were called in to investigate.

About a week later, the MSM circulated the story that the mysterious package to Bill Clinton was a false alarm and was nothing to be concerned about. And in the years since, as I have watched our MSM become little more that gossip-spreaders, I have wondered if they managed to intimidate the hell out of Bill Clinton, too..............

Can't prove it, but his administration was pushing the Germans and other Europeans to do away with their protections for the privacy of their people in their electronic communications. That I know. I posted the link to the German article (which was dated during the Clinton administration) on it long ago, but I can't find that link or the article now.

Back then, the excuse for eavesdropping was protecting intellectual property.

By that logic George Bush has proved once and for all that men shouldn't be in any important post.

"Men" is too large and diverse a group to be catagorically judged by the actions of George Bush.

You can't draw such inferences about women from the actions of one woman, either.

What’s beyond pissed? Try sadness. I just learned that my sister-in-law’s niece signed up for the military. What’s the reason this kid joined the Army? To travel and see the world! She bought the propaganda hook, line, and sinker. Her dad is a former military man and believes she’ll be assigned some cush position in Germany. Maybe if the kid or her parents saw the realities of war on TV, like soldiers coming home in body bags or blown off heads and limbs, this 18 year old girl would be going off to college instead of war. What’s even sadder is her cousins adore her, and they don’t even know she signed up. My brother, sister-in-law, and their kids went to see her this summer to say goodbye because they don’t know if they’ll ever see her again.

Why should Nancy be against the war when her husband is a war profiteer? The war will never negatively affect Nancy’s life unless the military draft is instituted and her loved ones are dragged off to be killed.

So getting back to the American Revolution, how did it come to fruition? When it was supported by the rich and the poor. Mostly led by the rich and fought by the poor.

too many of them don't work for us. They have rewritten the rules, we think we still have rights. At the present time we do not, obviously.
We work for them however, and I hope someday we do not, or refuse to anymore, as long as they do not live up to their part of the bargain.

No other possibility - she is playing hard ball for the Rovian team. Why? Years of illegal wiretaps of her and her in-group; in-so-deep that if they go down, she goes down just as far; lack of any personal integrity; shares BushCo values? Just to inject a slightly different angle, every time I hear one of our Senators or Reps talk about "our friends on the other side of the aisle" I want to scream. If you're friends with these fascist, tax-dollar stealing, constitution-defiling bastards you are NOT looking out for the interests of the American people.

How about "colleagues on the other side of the aisle" or some other honorific.

When the Repigs want to stop something legislatively THEY DO WHATEVER IT TAKES WITHOUT REGARD TO COURTESY OR PROTOCOL OR FRIENDSHIP. It's always about winning because they think they are RIGHT.

Why can't Pelosi and company do business the same way??

114. When she first became Minority Leader I thought she was just weak
Between her and Tom Daschle and her and Harry Reid, they were the most spineless weaklings ever to come on your TV and give a rebuttal to Bush's SOTU which was filled end to end with blatant lies.

I knew she didn't have majorities in Congress and chalked up her unwillingness to stand against the GOP as "she doesn't have the votes".

But she's the Speaker now and she is no longer just spineless and weak. She's complicit.

I know DU rules sort of defend Democrats blindly no matter how wrong they are but here's one case where I think the only way we're going to get real leadership out of Democrats is to support Sheehan's run (which I admit is probably doomed and she herself is not a perfect candidate either) or to support a Democratic overthrow of her in the House.

same same same, sounds like a song. Same masters, same money,
same goals. The FIRE (read finance economy) accounts for twice
the GDP percentage as manufacturing, and is the single largest
economic sector in America. Any funds you have or ever will
have, WILL be diluted, pilfered, taken "for the
children", leaving you poorer with a lower standard of
living.  

There are NO true statesmen left. The concept has been removed
from the American lexicon. The Republicans got hijacked, and
the Democrats did too. You can blame one party or another
party or the lamppost, doesn't matter when the music stops.
Soon as we figure out that they are the SAME, we might get
some where. Till then, same same same.

Not so proud that I voted for her when she was up for re-election. I had no idea what an enabler she would become. I wish we could recall her for totally ignoring what her constituents want her to do. And how come only Democrats (like Gray Davis) seem to be the only ones who can be recalled?

It would do our party no harm if Cindy beat Pelosi.

166. I stopped by her DC Office...
...on a recent business trip. I wanted to let the Speaker know how rudely I was treated by her SF staff when I called regarding wiretapping. I thought she was probably unaware that her staff were telling non-district voters they would not take their calls. I figured I was not alone in thinking the Speaker was a national post and as such, we should be able to have our opinions known. As soon as I got the words "I felt they were disrespectful" out of my mouth, the DC aide cut me off, saying (quite rudely, as it were) "No they weren't." No apology, no nothing. I just smiled and left, thinking Granny Nanny needed to go.

Later, I sent the Speaker a note, letting her know this life long Democrat had sent a contribution to Cindy Sheehan.

The reply, I'm sure, is in the mail.
