Yep, over the last week my wrist started to remind me that I have been abusing it
So got myself a typing glove
And a nice ergonomic keyboard
The latter is very slow going, since I am not familiar with it...but cheaper than the alternative
So take care of your hands... it can be ahem painful

numbness in the hand. Glad you are taking care before it gets bad!

4. You might also stop using a standard mouse |
|
Try a trackball, they're better for the wrist.

Good luck with the conservative method. Maybe you should lay off the keyboard for a short spell. :P I couldn't either if I were you. LOL

...get one of those flexible blue ice pack thingies and wrap it around the wrist for an hour or two. Once you feel pain, there is already danger of nerve damage -- since carpal tunnel is due to the nerve bundle swelling inside a bone tunnel that won't expand. Ice makes it feel better and helps to shrink it.

11. I have what I believe to be carpal tonal |
|
During the workday my hands and fingertips will suddenly become numb to the point where I need to flex them back to feeling.
I wake in the middle of the night with one or both of my arms completely numb.
It's in both arms to the point where I've become concerned about it. However, I am one of the millions of Americans without health insurance. I've been told that I need to see a specialist to even diagnose me with the condition before I can even begin to rectify the problem.
:sigh:

one thing you can insist on is an ergonics package
I work at home so I bought the gear and taking it very easily on the typing
Once I get to 500 words today on fiction, will turn it off

I'm a chicken re: surgery. I used one of those Dr. Scholls hand to above-the-wrist guards. Wore it every waking and sleeping hour I could for about 2-3 months, and took it easy on my right (mouse) hand when I had to do computer work. Also did hand exercises and flexion exercises. It worked like a charm. I hardly have issues with the wrist anymore.
Good luck on your treatment.

27. An ergo keyboard is a good idea for afterwards... |
|
When the wrist is feeling better. But the wrist guard (splint, whatever the cloth/velcro thingie was I wore) worked wonders. Just make sure you get the proper size, put it on snugly (but not too snug), and wear it as often as possible, especially while sleeping, when you might roll over on your wrist, and while your body is healing itself.
BTW, I'm not a doctor/ standard disclaimers apply.

28. I had surgery in early April. |
|
The surgery was performed on my left hand when I reached a point where I couldn't stand the burning anymore. I used a wrist splint for a few years which helped quite a bit until it didn't. After having pain and burning in my entire left arm and shoulder I found a great orthopedic surgeon who fixed things. The surgery sidelined me for a few days but it was well worth it. I had very little discomfort following out-patient surgery and my hand has healed nicely.
