Administrator: County Clerk saves only $171 by eliminating weddings
Barnett's decision to end civil weddings will save the county less than $200 per year, according to statistics compiled by County Administrative Officer Ron Errea.
Barnett's decision last month allows her to eliminate a deputy county clerk, which saves the county $63,171 annually. But people getting married pay a small fee, and that brought in $63,000 a year, according to Errea.
''The elimination of this program will result in an annual savings of $171," Errea wrote in his report to the Board of Supervisors.
It cost $30 for a County Clerk's wedding ceremony. About 44 percent of all weddings in Kern were performed in the Clerk's office until last month, when Barnett eliminated the program. She said the weddings cost the county too much money and endangered security of her office.
Many critics, however, said Barnett, a devout Christian, eliminated the program so her subordinates would not perform weddings for same-sex couples. The wedding program ended three days before same-sex marriage became legal in California.
