Poll question: Were you aware of the "offer on the table" described in the...
Edited on Tue Jul-08-08 05:26 AM by Mr_Jefferson_24
...linked piece concerning a resolution to the dispute over Iran's alleged nuclear program?

http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/07/07/10184/

From the piece, the offer on the table:

“We propose that Iran’s efforts to produce enriched uranium and other related nuclear activities be conducted on a multilateral basis, that is to say jointly managed and operated on Iranian soil by a consortium including Iran and other governments. This proposal provides a realistic, workable solution to the US-Iranian nuclear standoff. Turning Iran’s sensitive nuclear activities into a multinational program will reduce the risk of proliferation and create the basis for a broader discussion not only of our disagreements but of our common interests as well. “

On edit: minor spelling/grammar.

1. The only reason I was aware was because of an encounter...
with a congressional aid and an old man.
I was at a kick off event for the opening of an area Obama office when I was in a conversation with a couple of people. An 80+ year old WWII Veteran and a young aid to our Congresswoman.
The Veteran brought up the resolution. I had read something about it here that very day but the thread didn't indicate the actual resolution.

The way the veteran put it to he aid, was that this resolution was an act of war.

2. The resolution is not what I was referring to in this poll.

I was referring to the proposal described/co-authored by former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Thomas Pickering:

“We propose that Iran’s efforts to produce enriched uranium and other related nuclear activities be conducted on a multilateral basis, that is to say jointly managed and operated on Iranian soil by a consortium including Iran and other governments. This proposal provides a realistic, workable solution to the US-Iranian nuclear standoff. Turning Iran’s sensitive nuclear activities into a multinational program will reduce the risk of proliferation and create the basis for a broader discussion not only of our disagreements but of our common interests as well. “

Sorry if I didn't make this clear in the OP.

3. It feels like the dye is cast and war is coming regardless if people know or not.
If hotheads continue to hold power in Tel Aviv and Washington, things will not end well for all sides involved.

4. I can't disagree with you.
"Hotheads" does however seem an extraordinarily benign/charitable way to describe the insane criminals that run Israel and the U.S.

18. Isn't the IAEA enough international oversight?
Why would any nation allow their nuclear energy program to be run by a multinational consortium? IAEA said they see no sign of weaponizing. It makes perfect sense for them to use nuclear energy to profit off their oil reserves.

The whole thing is ridiculous. Pakistan--a far more unstable nation--has nuclear weapons and we didn't do anything about it.

19. IAEA monitoring should and would be more than sufficient...
...but I think Iran is willing to submit to this (they certainly shouldn't have to) hoping to avoid the war AIPAC would like the U.S. to wage.

You're quite right, it is ridiculous.
