While politicians in Washington neglect national infrastructure and concentrate on gimmicks, China is doing it again. Last week some officials have unveiled a plan to build the biggest mass transit system in human history. There's nothing in English, but it's still amazing.
It appears to be dreamt up by some Party officials in a room, but they have just proposed 2000 km of rail transit in the Pearl River Delta region, consisting of 20 lines. It would be built over 10 years, and the explicit goal is to make the region as well-served as Paris and Tokyo.
19 Chinese cities either have rail mass transit or are planning it, and 20 or 30 more have unofficial plans. And don't forget the world's biggest high speed rail project being built, and plans to build cars that run on methanol (not ethanol).
Wow.
