TEDTalk Tuesday: Teaching Simulations to Walk
This week's TEDTALKTUESDAY is given by a biologist ho applies the principles of motion to computer simulations. With experience in the mounted combat scenes in The Return of the King as well as character animations in Grand Theft Auto 4, today's speaker demonstrates how this new level of realism took shape, and hints at possible future applications, such as predicting the possible effects of brain surgery. Beginning with teaching a stick figure to walk in a straight line, today's speaker shows us just how realistic digital character animation is becoming.

Enjoy!

About this talk

Torsten Reil talks about how the study of biology can help make natural-looking animated people -- by building a human from the inside out, with bones, muscles and a nervous system. He spoke at TED in 2003; see his work now in GTA4.

1. This is too cool!
I can't believe this video is five years old. After goggling his name, I could not find anything more recent. Do you know of anything?

2. Well, if you've played GTA IV, you've seen some of the results.
His name isn't on Wikipedia, either, but I'm certain there are other examples of this. He mentions in the talk that a couple game developers had expressed some interest. That and film are the most likely uses for his technique.

3. Never played GTA IV or any other version
I am most interested in the application for film and using it for pre-surgery analysis.
