A phrase that grates on me like few others .......... |
|
....... 'flip flop'.
***SO*** Repubican. Stupid. Slanderous. Evocative. Capable of penetrating the smallest of minds.
And now it is in hackneyed usage for every jaw flapping teevee twit.

like when John Kerry was trashed and bashed as a 'flip-flopper', and like McCain and the media are doing to Obama. It is old, but so are all the other pet GOP memes.

... a flip-flop is not just a change in position, but a 180 degree shift in position. In other words, going from one side of a position to the other.
For example, a true flip-flop on Obama's Iraq policy would require him to pretty much embrace McCain's "be there for decades" policy.

On several issues. Part of it is maturation, exposure to evidence, reason, argumentation, life experience, etc. But in a political candidate, especially when it appears politically expedient, etc. it can be a kiss of death. Romney was a particularly transparent guy on that front.
I used to be very much anti-abortion. I am now pro-choice.
FLIP FLOP.
I used to be against concealed carry, and gun rights
I am now for them
FLIP FLOP
etc.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid the phrase is too useful not to use it now. If we can nail McCain as a flip-flopper (which ought to be easy), it's much more negative than to call him inconsistent.
