Larisa Alexandrovna: Pelosi is basically saying Karl Rove is above the law

at-Largely

by Larisa Alexandrovna: For journalists and others who like examining the landscape of investigative reporting.

Much info coming out about the Siegelman case...

Now let's recap what Rove's alleged (and likely) role is in the Siegelman case as well as other cases:

1. We know from the sworn testimony of Alabama Republican attorney and long-time opposition researcher, that Karl Rove - who was White House Deputy Chief of Staff - was directly involved in the political prosecution of Governor Siegelman. We also know this from other sources (see here and here).

2. We know that Rove was also involved - allbeit, less directly - in the prosecutions of attorney Paul Minor, sitting Mississippi Supreme Court Justice, Oliver Diaz, and judges John Whitfield and Wes Teel (see here, here, and here).

3. There are serious allegations that Rove was directly involved in the firing of 7 US Attorneys who would not "play ball."

4. All of this is going on while Rove has the highest security clearances and running elections from the White House.

5. There is suspicion that Rove is connected to/organized/ordered the Watergate-type break-ins and fires in both Alabama and Mississippi involving Siegelman and others.

6. The House Judiciary Committee has been investigating the US Attorney Scandal and Rove's alleged (and likely) involvement. They have subpeonaed him to testify on July 10.

7. Rove, who has repeatedly denied all of these allegations, attacked everyone who alleges his involvement as liars, and has had his proxies out repeating his propaganda over and over.

8. Rove has said that he will not testify in public, but will do so in private, not under oath, and with no transcript. (clearly a truth-teller)

9. The Chairman of the Judiciary, John Conerys, has threatened to hold Rove in contempt, going as far as suggesting an arrest.

This brings us to the current, and very disturbing news. As I stated earlier, Rove apparently has a new ally in Congress and one that should surprise all of you. From Alabama activist, Pam Miles:

"I have firm confirmation that Nancy Pelosi is urging the Judiciary committee NOT to go forward with contempt against Rove.

Congressman John Conyers and the Judiciary staff are battling for it but this has become an infight among dems."

Yes, the Speaker of the House, the first women Speaker in US history, and a Democrat is basically saying Karl Rove is above the law.

16. I think it makes her a protector of lawbreakers.
It puts her in opposition to the rule of law, and to the direct intentions of the Founders.

The question is why? I don't think any of us expected this.

2. Paralytic Pelosi reasons why

1) Rove has shit on Pelosi or her family through the wonders of illegal wiretapping.

2) She is playing coy to not rock the boat for the Dems chances in November.

3) She a coward like most once-they-get-in-office Dems.

4) Rove, Bush, Pelosi are part of the elitist's clique that runs the world and cover for their kind.

5) Nancy is too busty with more important things like her real estate portfolio and investments.

When Nancy Pelosi became the first woman Speaker of the House, she made history. She gavelled the House to order that day on behalf of all of America’s children and said, “We have made history, now let us make progress.” Now she continues to inspire women everywhere in this thought-provoking collection of wise words—her own and those of the important people who played pivotal roles in her journey.

39. Does * * * * stand for Rayburn,
the individual who built the mechanisms by which the office Pelosi holds functions? Sam built a lot of power into the Chair but he thought that those who occupied it would have integrity and decades of legislative service before their peers would allow them to sit in it.

13. I mean come on people its blatantly obvious
All politicians are liars and cheats - period. The Bush administration owns the justice system and therefore owns every last single politician in Washington.

Just look at the track record to date with respect to those who tried exposing Bush or who tried to hold him accountable to justice.

Pelosi Not Trying To Block Rove Contempt Charge

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/09/pelosi-not-trying-to-bloc_n_111673.html

July 9, 2008 12:56 PM

Tomorrow will see the latest battle in the the Bush administration's war with the House of Representatives over congressional testimony from top White House aides.

Karl Rove, facing a subpoena to appear before a House Judiciary subcommittee, declared through his attorney last week that he refused to appear "on the grounds that Executive Privilege confers upon him immunity from process in response to a subpoena directed to this subject."

Judiciary Committee chairman John Conyers (D-MI) responded by warning that the committee could move to hold Rove in contempt of Congress if he fails to show.

But now, liberal blogs are buzzing with an unsourced report that Speaker Nancy Pelosi is blocking Conyers from following through with the contempt charge. The rumor has spread far and wide on left-leaning blogs and message boards, from Democratic Underground to TPM Cafe.

And apparently it's false. Pelosi's communications director Brendan Daly sent us the following statement:

Those reports are completely untrue -- the Speaker has not urged the Judiciary Committee not to seek contempt charges against Karl Rove.

The committee can seek a contempt citation if it decides to do so. (Fyi, Henry Waxman's Oversight Committee is looking at a contempt citation against the attorney general over documents. The Speaker has no objections to that -- it's the committee's decision.)

on a side note, Miss Miles is sticking by her original statement... so this will get very interesting I think.

I also believe that many of these threads were started simply to cause havoc. The most amusing aspect of PelosiGate on DU are the people that were so eager to open fire with nary a clue as to whether the claim by this Pam Miles was ever verified.

I hope some at DU remember that Pam Miles appears to be dead wrong.

37. They've spread lies about Pelosi before, just to harass her
They once spread a rumor that Pelosi's office was running a phone in poll on impeachment. It was a lie just to get Pelosi's office harassed with thousands of phone calls.

The Pelosi haters do everything they possibly can to destroy any potential progress the left can make. They are Karl Rove's best friends. The people who stand most in Bush's way are the sole targets of the Pelosi haters. Its very sad anybody would take the word of Pelosi haters on anything.

38. Based on The Speaker's 'impeachment is off the table" stance, her backing of the Iraq War
funding, her FISA capitulation and telecom immunity support, among others, the quisling deserves to be harrassed right out of office. She is a disgrace to the Democratic Party and our country.

When she was elected Speaker I was delighted that a woman had finally attained that rank in Congress. How quickly that thrill died.
